How to Write the Perfect Blog

Blogs are a unique space on a collaborative community. Most pages on a community are edited by many people, building a resource on the community's topic. But blogs are usually an article written by just one person, not collaboratively at all.

In a way, that's similar to Message Walls and talk pages, but Message Walls are generally a conversation between two or more people. They might be about an issue on the wikia, or figuring out how to best write an article, or just saying hello! Blogs have people reacting to what's said, but aren't a conversation in themselves. They are a more like an article followed by a conversation.

And then there are forums. These are similar to blogs in some ways, but forum posts are often just a couple of lines long…

Promoting Your Wiki on Community Central's Discussions

Everyone is welcome to write about their community on Community Central's Discussions, whether it's an old and established wiki, or one that's brand new.

The two most important things in doing this are to provide a link to the wiki, and make sure you explain what the project is about.

Posts that are just a sentence or two long, and don't include a link and an explanation are not going to attract any attention, and are likely be deleted. Remember, most people on Central will have very different interests to you. So you need to write enough to encourage them to come to see your project anyway. Add at least a couple of sentences (more is better!) to describe your topic as if the person reading has no idea what it's about.

When you create your blog…

Five Things Every Admin Should Know

I've given a lot of social advice to admins and to others on Wikia, but today I want to give admins some more practical advice on pages to use and skills to learn. These are the top five areas that I'd suggest any admin learn.

Wiki Activity is a useful page for getting an overview of what's going on on a wikia, but it's not the full picture. The full details of what's happening on any community are on Recent Changes. This essential page lists every change on the wikia, including edits on pages that are less often changed, like templates.

For an admin, or for any keen contributor, this page is the starting point for understanding everything that's going on on your community. You can see exactly what pages are being edited, and have links to a…

Before You Adopt

So here's the problem. You've found a fascinating wikia, just ripe for growth, and you're raring to go. But for some reason or other, it's not eligible for adoption. Maybe the admin is almost active and had edited in the last month. Or you haven't been on the wikia long enough to be eligible. Or maybe you just aren't ready to adopt yet.

But even without being an admin, there are lots of things you can do to help the wikia, and maybe get ready for adoption.

The first thing I would do is look to see who else is on the wikia. There are two good ways to do this. One is to go to Special:RecentChanges, your one-stop shop for wikia information. This is one of the most important pages on the wikia, and If you can master reading this, you will be a wik…

These Are a Few of My Favorite Wikias

Hi, I'm Sannse, part of Wikia's Community Support Team. As part of supporting communities, I visit a lot of wikias. Here are a few of my favorites:

  • 1 The PPC wikia
  • 2 Tardis Data Core
  • 3 Star Wars Fanon
  • 4 Bus Transport in Hong Kong

The Protectors of the Plot Continuum wikia is a fascinating place. It's all about the world of a fictional society that finds bad fanfiction (badfic) and goes into those stories to fix them. So it's a wikia about fanfiction about fanfiction - I hope I've described that correctly!

The wikia is well written, and documents an amazingly complex and thought out world. It's one of those rare places that take such a hold that you have to click one more link. Until you find yourself lost in stories featuring song lyrics and another …
