Hey gang!

I am pleased to announce that FandomDesktop is now LIVE for opt-in exploration! During this time, logged-in users will be able to switch from Oasis or Hydra to FandomDesktop as their wiki experience through an opt-in toggle, found in an on-site banner and in user preferences. They will also be able to switch back to their respective legacy experiences from their user preferences.

The purpose of this period is to let editors and admins get used to the new design and, especially, for admins to prepare their communities for full migration, which will come early this summer.

Please note! Initially, your wiki will have default theming for both Light and Dark mode. Don't freak out! It just means your customizations haven't been applied yet. For Fandom wikis, jumping into the Theme Designer will give you the option to either start fresh and create a whole new theme or to import and then tweak your existing theme. For Gamepedia wikis, there is no previous Theme Designer data to import, so you will need to start from scratch. If your wiki has an assigned Wiki Representative, they will be happy to help you with this. Wikis without a Wiki Representative can check out the Fandom Discord.

Not everything is fully deployed either yet, like the Light and Dark Theme switcher button, as mentioned in the Theme Designer blog, but there will be frequent releases of updates over the next few weeks. For Light and Dark mode, you can switch between them in your preferences (as well as switch between FandomDesktop and the existing Oasis or Hydra skins.

If you encounter an issue, please be sure to report it. You have a number of options to do so:

  • If your wiki has a Wiki Representative assigned, be sure to raise issues with them.
  • Our help desk team is ready to receive any bug reports you may have.
  • Our official Discord server has a dedicated UCX channel for discussing the new experience with other editors, admins, Wiki Reps, and Staff.

As you explore the new experience, be sure to go through your normal workflows and make sure things are working as intended. We have had a crew of experienced editors and staff testing it internally, but you know your specific workflows better than we do, so your input is critical!

Admins, you should definitely check out the new Theme Designer and the FandomDesktop preparation guide for advanced customization. When you feel that your wiki is ready for the new experience, there’s a button in your Admin Dashboard to let us know. This may impact the order in which your wiki moves to FandomDesktop as a default experience for all editors, admins, and readers, but we make no guarantee of earlier placement in rollout waves. This is available on both Fandom and Gamepedia wikis. Note: Admin Dashboard is a new feature for Gamepedia wikis on FandomDesktop and can be accessed at Special:AdminDashboard.

As always, we’re happy to take your questions, but the UCX channel on Discord is the best place to discuss the opt-in release with your fellow editors, admins, and Fandom representatives.
