Hey hey hey! Welcome (back) to the second technical updates blog of April! As always, I'll cycle through some of the more user-facing changes that happened on the platform in the past two weeks and/or are about to go live. This ranges from bugs that got fixed, experiments that are running, and changes that were made. This blog also serves as a good opportunity for you to give feedback, ask questions, or raise potential issues you may be encountering.

Notable Changes[]

  • Let me immediately start with the big change that several of you have been waiting for: video uploading has been re-enabled on the platform. As of yesterday, .mp4, .webm, .mkv, and .mov are once again supported video types.
  • As a general commitment, Fandom keeps accessibility in mind. After releasing its own first accessibility statement, new web accessibility Help page was created with feedback from Fandom Stars, aiming to help users understand what accessibility is and why it's important, as well as tips to improve their wikis. For more in depth guidance on specific features, we updated select Help pages with further guidance too - as linked to from the main accessibility Help page. Read more about these accessibility resources in the Staff blog
    • If you'd like to learn more, please join the office hours event on Fandom Discord on April 23rd at 8am PST/11am EST/4pm BST to discuss the new resources and where we go from there.

Recent Fixes[]

  • When a wiki is using the Fandom brand colors, the notification counter and Search Bar no longer blends into the horizontal navigation.
  • The Profile Panel accessible by clicking the user profile icon now opens properly again when navigating through different pages on Discussions.
  • The MediaWiki:Movepage-reason-dropdown was whitelisted for admin editing.

Fixes in Development[]

  • Part of the continued effort to clean up the user-experience, the UXFCP team is working to remove the in-line newsletter signup module on FandomMobile as it's just taking up unnecessary space that we want to give back.

Product Support Owner: Héctor
  • [Feature Development] Search tool for Interactive Maps: We wish to thank everyone who collaborated with us and provided feedback on how best to move forward with this tool to accommodate the editor needs. The team's currently moving forward based on those suggestions.

That's it for the issue! Per usual, if you encounter something that feels off about the platform, please report it by sending in a bug report, reach out to your Community Manager, contact the Product Support Owner on their Wall/talk page, or just simply sound off in the comments here. Remember to include a link to where you're experiencing the issue, a screenshot if it is something visible, as well as steps to reproduce your issue. As always, thank you for helping us by continuing to communicate. Happy editing, everyone!
