Black History Month was filled with programming that celebrated and honored Black creators, inventors, and IPs. Our final initiative was an in-depth panel discussion on -Black Voices & Content in Genre IP - to celebrate Black culture and representation in entertainment. This was an open discussion spotlighting the journeys of Black creators and innovators in TV, comic books, stage, and film.
Meet the Panel[]
The panel was moderated by Joelle Monique, an iHeartRadio Executive Producer & Entertainment Writer, and joined by Sanford Greene, Illustrator behind Image Comics’ Bitter Root (soon to be a movie helmed by Regina King and Ryan Coogler); Steve Harper, Co-Executive Producer for Stargirl; and Cameron Johnson, Co-Creator & Executive Producer of Tom Swift. We explored how our journey can impact the development of diverse characters and the importance of unique and authentic storytelling.
Diversity in Entertainment:[]
Powerful narratives are made from building relationships between people and stories. We see ourselves in characters and relate to them through shared experiences—film, television, and media influence how we see ourselves and others. Diversity in entertainment can change the way the world thinks and open doors for more and better opportunities.
Takeaways:[]
From superheroes to scientists, there were many gems to catch in the panel. We wanted to share a few takeaways that encouraged us and might empower you as well.
- You can reinvent characters and tell stories in diverse ways. Creators approach content from various lenses and source inspiration from history, lived experience, and curiosity.
- Navigating uncomfortable conversations can be intimidating, but honest conversations are necessary to create inclusive spaces.
- Don’t be afraid to take up space. Feel empowered to use your voice in the room and share your lived experience.
