Hey everyone!

Check out the latest Technical Updates since November 4, 2022. We’ll continue to update the editor community on bug fixes and product development updates on a bi-weekly basis!

Notable Changes:[]

Interactive Maps[]

  • As a maps editor, you can now use wikitext in your map description.
  • We’re continuing to polish Interactive Maps and have made usability enhancements, allowing you to exceed the max character limit during map editing. This way, you have more flexibility while editing and can paste more text before reducing it back down to the limit that allows you to save.

Mobile Theming[]

  • We’ve added a line between the Fandom global navigation bar and the local navigation bar to make it clear they are distinct.
  • The wiki name in sticky nav on mobile preview and the actual mobile experience now match up to give admins a clearer preview state.

  • Following up from our fix to the 2017 source editor, we've fixed the 2010 source editor so that the scrollbar stays fixed at the bottom if you’re adding content to the end of the page.

Known Issues:[]

The following are known bugs (or areas of improvement) that are currently in progress and that we hope to have released by the time of the next Technical Update:

  • Discussions. The categories dropdown menu when creating new posts is center aligned, instead of being close to the dropdown option.
  • Mobile Editing. The page preview accessible on the last screen of the mobile editor source mode loads without styling, in a broken state.
  • Mobile Theming. In response to your feedback, we recently removed the color contrast requirement for accent colors and are just showing a warning instead. However, we are aware that some themes still can't be saved and are investigating further.
  • VisualEditor. If you visit an action=edit&section=new URL for an already existing page with VisualEditor as your default editor, you receive an error.

Development Updates:[]

Mobile Theming[]

More than 33,000 wikis have already opted into mobile theming, which is really incredible! We’ll be rolling out mobile theming as a default feature that no longer requires an opt-in around the end of the month. However, for now we’ll skip communities with mobile custom CSS (to ensure that rolling out the feature doesn’t break anything with the mobile CSS) and those that still have contrast issues.

Discussions Moderation[]

  • Post/Reply History. The backend work for post and reply history will be completed in the CATS development team’s current sprint. Frontend work (the user-facing work) is in progress. The team is aiming to wrap up that work by the beginning of December, so there’s time for testing and full rollout before our code freeze in mid-December.
  • Report Notifications. Unfortunately, the work on post/reply history took longer than originally anticipated so it’s unlikely that we’ll be able to get to notifications for reported posts by the end of the year. We're going to finalize work on the designs for this, which are nearly ready, and work on finding a spot for building this early in the new year.

Mobile Editing[]

  • Advanced Mobile Contributions (AMC). Advanced Mobile Contributions is once again live on Fandom, which automatically adds content moderation links to the mobile skin. The work that still remains on fully bringing this to the platform is some styling on the diff page, so right now it’s not enabled by default. If you want to use it, go to Special:MobileOptions on mobile to turn it on. Once we finish the styling work (the timeline for that is to be determined), we will enable AMC by default.
  • Performance Improvement. We are working on a performance improvement to the mobile editor this sprint that we hope will have a measurable impact on load times in the mobile editor.

We recently launched a new destination for fans to explore their favorite fandoms called FanCentral Beta! Thanks to your feedback, we’re thinking about how we can improve the experience for everyone. If you haven’t had a chance to check out FanCentral, read more about it here or share your feedback in the #fan-central channel in Discord!

If there’s anything you still think needs to be fixed that hasn’t yet, please be sure to either contact your Wiki Representative or, if your wiki doesn’t have one, send us a bug report!
