Hey everyone! Check out the latest Technical Updates since May 5th. We’ll continue to update the editor community on bug fixes and product development updates on a bi-weekly basis!

Known Issues[]

  • Mobile Editor. When editing on mobile, users are experiencing a few challenges: text that is on the page is lost when saving in the editor, or text that was deleted from the page is restored after saving. We are currently working to resolve this issue.
  • Fandom Mobile. As users switch from Visual mode to Source mode in the mobile editor, all pending changes are lost. We are working to resolve this issue and will provide an update soon.
  • Visual Editor. The Visual Editor deals poorly with pages that have multiple tables. Pages with multiple tables include a lot of padding, which causes errors as editors click to edit tables. Our team is currently working on fixing this issue.

Platform Development[]

User-Generated Content (UGC) team[]

  • Editor Onboarding. We’re excited to announce we’re shipping a recent experiment by adding edit icons next to section headers on desktop for logged-out users. This experiment increased registrations by 10% and allowed logged-out users to see clear editor entry points on the platform.
  • Thanks Extension. We’re adding the Thanks extension to the platform! We chose Thanks as the most potentially-impactful extension on our community-curated extension nomination list, and we prioritized it for being added to the platform. We’re fully testing this extension and invite wikis to opt-in. If you’re interested in testing this feature, reach out to a Fandom Staff member or your Wiki Representative for more information.

User Experience (UX) team[]

Platform team[]

  • MediaWiki 1.39 Upgrade. Over 95% of the traffic is served from 1.39 wikis, and we are close to finishing the upgrade in the whole platform!

  • COPPA Age Screening. As we discussed in our last update, an age gate on wikis directed primarily toward children went live earlier this week. This is in compliance with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), a United States federal law that governs the platform, and provides age-screening on child-directed wikis that determines elements of the user experience (ad layout, certain features, etc) based on what the user opts-in to.
  • Fandom Compass. Fandom Compass is a circle of wikis united in showing Google and other search engines that they are the most authoritative answer to a question. The goal of the project is to recognize the work communities put into creating authoritative wikis, encourage more fans to visit, and hopefully inspire those fans to join these wiki communities. Jenny Uchisawa explains what Fandom Compass is and how your community can get involved.

If there’s anything you still think needs to be fixed that hasn’t yet, please be sure to either contact your Wiki Representative or, if your wiki doesn’t have one, send us a bug report!
