Questions or feedback? Contact us!

Hello, hello! You might have noticed something different—I'm not Lostris! This is my first time publishing a technical update. That said, we're sticking to the same format you're used to. As always, these biweekly blog posts aim to keep you informed about the most relevant platform updates, including product releases, ongoing experiments, and a selection of resolved or in-progress bug fixes. Feel free to use the Comments section to share your insights, questions, feedback, or any concerns you may have. We'd love to hear from you!

Notable Change[]

  • To avoid vandalism, Fandom usually has some edit restrictions based on user levels. For the case of Discussions, logged-out users were already not able to participate, only users with an emailconfirmed account could post. Recently though, our beloved team of Fandom volunteers, SOAP, who help protect us from vandalism and spam attacks, discovered significant waves of spambot accounts on Discussions. As an additional measure to keep everyone safe on the platform, an extra protection layer was added, meaning that Discussions are now only available to use for those with an autoconfirmed and emailconfirmed account.

Recent Fixes[]

  • Users are not able to create duplicate posts on Discussions using the Create Post button while the post is being created. For some people with slow connections, once you have finished the post creation and clicked publish, you were able to click more than once - especially if you think the action wasn't accomplished - and this bug caused the post to be duplicated. With this fix, once you click on the button one time, the button will be disabled while the post is being processed.
  • The footer on German wikis has now been properly translated. The OVERVIEW section (ÜBERSICHT) previously had the first link, "What is Fandom?", incorrectly translated as "Was is Fandom?". Now it properly says "Was ist Fandom?".

Consumer Tools[]

Product Support Owner: Héctor
  • [Product Update] Discussion quizzes removal: The team is currently working on the deprecation of the Quizzes feature, a product that is currently available on Discussions. As a beta feature, this product never reached a full platform wide release, naturally limiting its engagement to only a handful of wiki communities. However, we recently detected a technical vulnerability related to the feature, causing us to decide to deprecate the feature altogether. Since only select wikis were using this, we reached out to them directly to inform them about this change. Once the deprecation process is complete, no new quizzes can be created anymore, nor can the existing ones be edited. However, users are still able to see and take all the existing quizzes, and if needed, admins can still delete them.

Tech Blog May 30, 2025 - Desktop UI updates to the navigation and drawer

Mocks of the experimented design changes

  • [New experiment] Desktop UI updates to the navigation and drawer: It's been a while since we launched the new navigation and the left content panels. Since then, we've been experimenting with widgets within the drawers, but now we'll also test out some tweaks to the overall design. This UI experiment aims to consolidate navigation, labeling, and improve consistency without modifying content or behavior of the drawer. If you're part of this A/B experiment, you will notice the following:
    • "Current" panel changes: The content previously stored in the "Current" panel has been moved to the "Explore" panel, and the "Current" panel itself has been removed.
    • "Menu" panel creation: A new panel, "Menu", has been created to sit on top of all the others, which will hold some things that we want quickly accessible in the navigation but don't want taking up too much space in the UI. The content of the menu breaks down into three categories: "Fandom property/app" links (which links to the content previously shown in the "Explore" panel"), Fandom "Editor" links ("Start a Wiki" – which will be removed from the horizontal navigation – and a link to Community Central), and "other Non-Fandom Brands" links (such as Metacritic and GameFAQ).
    • "History" panel and adjustments: Adds a new "Recent" panel to replace the tooltip view that currently exists when you exceed 3 "recent" items and the "History" option shows up. This icon will be triggered after five visited pages rather than three.
    • Color, font, and styling updates: In short, an effort to make all panels look and feel the same by unifying the used style, typography, and design where it makes sense.

That's it for the issue! Per usual, if you encounter something that feels off about the platform, please report it by sending in a bug report, reach out to your Community Manager, contact the Product Support Owner on their Wall/talk page, or just simply sound off in the comments here. Remember to include a link to where you're experiencing the issue, a screenshot if it is something visible, as well as steps to reproduce your issue. As always, thank you for helping us by continuing to communicate. Happy editing, everyone!
