We have an exciting update for you today! This morning, we announced that Fandom has acquired seven websites from Red Ventures including GameSpot, TV Guide, Giant Bomb, Cord Cutters News, GameFAQs, Metacritic and Comic Vine. Knowing that, you probably have one big question:
What does this acquisition mean for Fandom wikis and editors?
Good things! As we continue to build on the success of Fandom’s core platform, we’re excited to welcome sites with a variety of new content types into the fold. In addition to our wikis, these sites allow us to expand the ways in which we serve fans with news, trends, ratings, reviews, and commerce—all about the games, movies, and shows you love.
Fandom is already a really big site, and now we’re adding the 46 million monthly global visitors to these websites into the Fandom ecosystem as well. That’s a lot of new eyeballs! One of the biggest benefits is that we’ll be able to explore new ways to bring that traffic to your wiki communities, building the opportunity for new visitors and more wiki editors joining the fold.
And as the Fandom business expands, this will allow us to unlock more resources to support our wiki communities and to build and incorporate more tools that you can use on your wikis. That’s in addition to some of the big things we’re already going to be releasing by the end of this year, like mobile theming and Discussions AbuseFilter, to make the admin and editor experience even better on Fandom.
As with any acquisition, the early days means there’s a lot to figure out, so there will undoubtedly be more questions than concrete answers right now. But please reach out to us with any questions that you have, and we’ll answer what questions we can in the comments, as your questions and feedback will be incredibly valuable as we start working with our new team members and transition these brands into Fandom.
We’re really looking forward to bringing these brands together and all the exciting opportunities we’ll be able to bring to our community and for the hundreds of millions of fans who visit Fandom every month. We’ll be reaching more fans across more platforms, and bringing more attention to all of the awesome work you do on your wikis. We look forward to working with the community to continue building and collaborating on this incredible resource for fans in an even bigger way.
I'm a huge fan of Star Wars, Star Trek, and Marvel.
