Hello hello!

It's me again :) Lady Lostris is out of the office this week, so I'm responsible for publishing this second tech update of March. As we always explain, these blog posts are posted every two weeks with the most relevant information related to the changes done by our engineers under the hood. If you have questions or have something to report, feel free to jump to the comments section and leave it there. And now, let's talk about the last news:

Notable Changes[]

If you visited the wikis from mobile in the last years, you probably noticed how sometimes you were redirected to the Fandom App. This practice is known as Deep Linking. This is ending now. With the last initiatives focused on improving the mobile experience, we saw how the mobile traffic has been growing more and more, and our visitors spend more time on the site. We want to keep the trend and from now on, we won't invite/redirect our mobile users to the Fandom App. This doesn't mean the app will be removed; all those app users can continue using it; we are just removing the deep linking.

Recent Fixes[]

  • Fixed contrast requirements for some areas in diff pages.
  • Multiple Cargo issues. Thanks to League of Legends Esports Wiki for reporting all of them and helping us to investigate the origin of all of them.
  • The option to select between dark/light themes has been restored in Special:Preferences.
  • CSS wasn't loading correctly from Mobile when using Fandom Desktop. It works as in Desktop now.
  • Slideshow gallery layout was broken not showing the images in the same line.
  • We have fixed tables using full width on narrow desktop layouts because they weren't using the whole width.
  • No more annoying messages in Special:Editcount making the tables hard to read.
  • Gender preference is reflected again on User namespace translations.
  • Special:BrowseData is fixed now in some wikis using Semantic MediaWiki where this page was giving database errors.
  • Wiki toolbar settings won't be lost again after changing your preferences.
  • The security flaw on Discussions, allowing editors to add HTML formatting, has been fixed.
  • No more votes in locked polls! The bug that allowed users to vote on locked Discussions polls is fixed now.
  • Special:ListUsers loads as always without more time-out messages.
  • FlaggedRevs extension allows to reject changes again.
  • Clicking on a section in the Table of Content from Mobile will scroll to that section as before.

Development Updates[]

Platform Team[]

Product Support Owner: Antonio
  • [MediaWiki Update] MediaWiki update from Version 1.39 to Version 1.43: Do you remember when we announced the MediaWiki Upgrade? It was November, and we said 50% of the traffic would be migrated by March. We were optimistic but cautious. And surprise! Thanks to the hard work of our engineers, we have reached 99% of the traffic 1 week before ending March! We have more wikis left to be updated (including Dev Wiki), but thousands of wikis, like Community Central, are now using version 1.43. We are still fixing some problems you reported, but everything is stable and works pretty well. What do you think? Do you like the changes? What's your favorite one?

Consumer Tools[]

Product Support Owner: HƩctor
  • Registration form updates: Consumer Tools has finished the design for the new registration form. We are closer to implementing the changes. This should not only update the design but also improve the efficiency of this form and facilitate the registration of new accounts. They are still working on the designs for the sign-in form, forgot your password & success page, and the password update from the user settings.
  • Progress tracking for tables: The team is working on identifying the tables suitable for this feature. The initial tracking was made on the top 1,000 wikis, which resulted in more than 7 million pages with trackable tables! After some refinements, the sample has been reduced and limited more accurately. With the numbers in mind and after checking how the communities use those tables, we are ready to continue building the feature.

And that's all! As we always say in these blog posts, we encourage all of you to report any problem by sending a bug report, reach out to your Community Manager, contact the Product Support Owner on their Wall/talk page, or post a comment here.. Remember to include a link to where you’re experiencing the issue, a screenshot if it is something visible, as well as steps to reproduce your issue. Thank you for helping us by continuing to communicate and have a wonderful weekend!
