Hello hello! Check out the latest Technical Updates since December 1st. This is the last tech update of 2023, as we go into a code-freeze at the end of the year, meaning that we won’t release more bug fixes until next year.
But let’s talk about the most recent changes!
Recent Fixes[]
- Avatar quality has been improved in the global nav.
- <math> tag was unreadable on dark theme when display=”block” is used in FandomMobile.
- Disabled accounts with rights on a wiki aren’t counted in the list of rights in Special:ListUsers anymore.
- Clicking the infobox image in FandomMobile will load that image again rather than the second one.
- Pages with quotation marks in the title were showing duplicated H3 headings on FandomMobile. It is fixed now.
- Cargo wasn’t storing certain Unicode characters correctly; it’s fixed!
- Small/Icon images now respect the link and alt attributes as they should in FandomMobile.
- Edit icons next to headers redirect to the login page for anon users instead of the editor tool if they don’t have permission to edit the pages.
- The search popup and interactive maps embed were empty when using Chrome’s incognito mode and Firefox’s private browsing mode.
- Table row tools are restored again in the VisualEditor.
- Users editing on iPad OS with the 2017 source editor couldn’t scroll, it is fixed too.
- Fandom login via Facebook wasn’t working properly; you can use it to access your accounts here again.
- There were some problems with receiving and then later dismissing or updating notifications after recent changes. Thanks to all of you who reported it, we could release the fix very fast thanks to your reports!
Fixes in Development[]
- Our fix to extend the min-height of the VisualEditor’s text area in User Talk Pages caused other minor problems. The code was reverted, and we will continue the work to fix it as soon as possible.
- The rendering of math & chem formulas is causing some error messages. Our team is investigating the problem and we will work on a solution after the code-freeze.
Development Updates[]
User-Generated Content (UGC) team[]
- [Ending Experiment] Simplified Visual Editor: After some complications, the simpler and more familiar editor interface experiment is ending now. We are checking the results. Depending on the numbers, we will continue the experimentation related to this idea next year.
- [New Experiment] Enable AMC by default for logged-in mobile users: The Advanced Mobile Contributions tool adds crucial content moderation tools to the mobile skin. This test is to confirm the advanced tools are not having a negative impact on engagement if enabled for all logged-in users by default. We will make this a default feature if no negative impact is seen.
User Experience[]
- [New Experiment] Global nav redesign: We are looking into changing up the Global nav bar for all users. We will first be running an experiment to see if new options added or removed change the experience. Keep a look out for more information!
Traffic team[]
- Quick Answers: We continue to work on fine-tuning the Quick Answers dashboard. Stay tuned for more updates on this feature in January!
And that’s all! But before I leave you all, I wanted to emphasize how important it is for us and how much we appreciate you all taking the time to let us know whenever you have found a bug. Your collaboration is vital for detecting all of them and understanding how they affect the platform. You are a crucial part of fixing the bugs. The whole Community Team and our engineers thank all of you!
