Hello hello,

User-generated content is vital to this platform. To help all of you create this content, sometimes we add new tools, others we improve features related to creating content, and sometimes we focus on encouraging our users to contribute.

That was the premise of our previous experiment conducted by the UGC team. The Suggested pages experiment improved the number of edits by 7,45%, and although some parts have to be redefined before productizing it —limiting the target of those notifications and giving more control over the content appearing in the notifications—, this kind of initiative is proving to be in the right direction.

The experiment we are announcing today continues in the same direction, encouraging users to contribute by recognizing their work and showing the impact of their creations.

  • Experiment name: Impact notifications
  • Test Launch: Monday, August 12th
  • Test Closes: 2 weeks
  • Will Be Tested On: 1/3 of our editors
  • Hypothesis: We believe that sharing with new editors the impact their first edits are having in terms of pageviews will make editing feel more rewarding for them, feeding into their intrinsic altruistic motivation and causing them to make more edits than they otherwise would.
  • Other Notes: Our goals with this experiment are to motivate all editors to continue contributing by showing them the impact they are making, increase editor retention, and increase the number of edits.

There are two limits for this experiment: We are showing the notification at most every 7 days (per wiki), and there is a lower limit of pageviews (20 pvs). The number of pageviews is roughed; depending on the results, we will explore ways to make it more accurate.

We will run 2 variants with different text for this experiment:

  • First version of the text: The pages you've edited have been viewed # times!
  • Second version of the text: Your edits have been seen # times! Keep editing, your impact grows with every edit.

Attention: This experiment can conflict with some personal dev scripts, for example CategorizedNotifications.

We're excited to see the results of this experiment and how it can help us further support and motivate our editors.
