I want to completely redo the Navboxes on The Simpsons: Tapped Out Wiki since quiet a long time, but never could get around to do it. Recently another user has made one huge step into the right direction. In order to avoid unnecessary work in the future I think it would be best to do it right directly.
Since new content gets released frequently and the navbox content changes often, part of my idea for navboxes includes that their content gets auto-generated from a category-structure. The obvious tool for that would be DPL. However, as stated on several help pages it can cause performance issues.
Since I don't have any experience how good or bad performance actually is, I did some googleing to find out if someone has done something similar. I found several wikis where people mentioned doing it, but not a single actual implementation.
Currently there are about 2000 (and counting) pages with navboxes on them. My question now is if someone has some insight whether this is doable performance wise or if you know a wiki that is using DPL-Navboxes, so that I can ask there. If you know alternative methods to achieve the same, I'm happy to hear them too!
Alternatively I would also be satisfied if the solution consists of a subpage for every navbox that contains the DPL-calls while the actual template page gets substituted from the subpage by a bot whenever new content gets released. (The first solution would still be preferred of course)
