So how do I plan to fulfill my proposed role? By giving users more ways to interact.
IDEA 1: We have an Off-Topic post that is posted on monthly basis. This gives users very little chance to interact as it is really difficult for new users to search them. I plan on changing it to weekly basis.
IDEA 2: Initially when discussions was new and rules weren't so strict(talking about almost 2-3 years ago), we had many users who created role play posts and fanfiction posts. Since fanfiction belongs on fannon wiki, we can revive the role play post spirirt. Every week or once in 2 weeks a user will be given a responsibilty to recreate a scene from the potterverse series and let all other users take part in it . This post will have one goal, and that would to recreate an entire scene as per user wish to make it more realistic and interactive. Once the new RP post will be released the old one will be locked and archived. How will the user be selected? There will be a series of post that will circle arround this idea, one post containing requests by users to make RP posts with potential scenes, one post containg list of RP names of users, one post containing a list of all RP posts that have taken place, one post containing a list basic guidelines that are to be followed by creating or participating in an RP(This one will also be linked in the discussion guidelines)
IDEA 3: when a new user comes along they are not familiar with rules even though they get an option to read the rules before/after creating the account but they are mostly like "Who cares?" We should not delete their first 50-100 posts and rather let them interact with users politely(politely being the keyword) and welcome them because these are the users that will follow are schemes and make them successful. I'd propose a wiki-guide post that will contain links to profiles of users with rights, wiki main page, discussion rules, important posts on wiki such as RP post series, etc, and other such links that might help them move arround the wiki and know what they are suppposed to do here. (We already have a similar post but it is not informative enough and quite old and out dated.)
IDEA 4: I have already mentioned discussion of wiki pages on D board to invite editors to D/B and vice versa and linking of those discussion posts to those wiki pages (coz we lack search engine on D board). I also propose a post that will contain a list of links to such posts to keep things organised and to keep a track record of it.
IDEA 5: Discussing new rules/ regulations with the community before impelemnting them. No one likes a forced list of rules and regulations. I mean as you always say "admins are janitors", and janitors don't shove rules down your throat, now do they? LOL. Sometimes instant and needful decisions need to be taken judging the fact that they are in the best intrest of the users but not always. Interacting with them and communicating with them is really important. One of the inactive mod of HPW used to ask user on the OT post before going offline if they needed any help or advice related to the wiki or HPW in specific. I am not saying that this is to be done or made a rule for everyone but interaction with users when ever it is convenient.
IDEA 6: That brings me to the next proposal, every month an admin would create a post that would clarify users doubts about the wiki and wiki related stuff or give users a breif update on what is going on the wiki, and what are the new big plans of the wiki like promoting the wiki side of HPW. I know that this isn't something that admins might be accustomed to doing but hear me out. 1 post a month, means 12 posts a year. Basically what you have to do is just create the post and leave it to the mods to answer them, occassionally answer them yourself as well but it won't be a necessity. This way admin presence on D board will be noticed and no one can blame the administration that they abandoned the D board like a bastard son.
These are just some ideas that I can think of and that I will implement if my proposal goes through. This is just a trailer and a rough idea of what I can possibly do. Inorder to see the film you must buy the tickets mate. You may also use these techniques and show them to be your thinking but if you plan to download the movie instead of buying the ticket, let me know, so that I can give you the best downloadable site that there is. After all my motive is to make sure that you enjoy the movie by whatever means you choose.
As far as resistence is considered, things can be worked upon but only if there is will to work it out.
Hey - sorry for the extremely long delay in my reply! Holidays were hectic and my wiki time has been limited so this fell off the radar. In general, your ideas seem fine, but I would suggest raising the most popular one or two to the Discussions users more widely to gather support. If the users have an interest then it is simple to make the changes needed to implement them as opposed to forcing changes over the possible objections. In general, a bottom up approach where users drive the process is better than any one person telling everyone what they can or can't do.
