Several spam pages on Vim Tips wiki[]

--Fritzophrenic 16:43, 1 July 2008 (UTC)

Looks like a pretty sustained attack. Here's more:

--Fritzophrenic 21:08, 1 July 2008 (UTC)

I have deleted all the above (and two more new ones), and blocked the IPs from our wiki. Summary of the IPs:
82.194.62.235 x 3
193.188.105.230
193.188.105.235 x 3
196.20.7.74 x 2
202.55.118.69
202.155.24.156
206.220.40.8
--JohnBeckett 01:10, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

And it continues today...

--Fritzophrenic 16:13, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

this type of spam is really annoying, very pointless, and even harder to auto-block. many of the ips seem to be some sort of shared ISP ip, or common proxy of some sort, as many of them have legit (sorta) edits on other wikis also. something like a school/college where multple people with different intent. keep nuking and blocking i guess, we'll try to find some common pattern we can block incoming. keep up the fight! --Uberfuzzy 05:31, 5 July 2008 (UTC)

ohai[]

I did some shopping.

All pages with no content started out as spam or likewise but have since been blanked. --User? 07:23, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

no idea what that blacklist page is supposed to be... or do.... but took care of a bunch of the spam where it was left, added a bunch of new things to the filters based on the spam [1] --Uberfuzzy 05:22, 5 July 2008 (UTC)

Spamming in the user namespace [2] (you may also want to delete the pages and block the users while you're at it). Drennan 16:59, 5 July 2008 (UTC)

Needs deleted, no actual url though. --User? 12:43, 6 July 2008 (UTC)

I deleted the two spams on the Vim wiki where we have had 27 of these pages in the last 6 days. My guess is that someone is playing with a spam machine. Each of the 27 pages had a title that is exactly 8 random letters.

If anyone wants to check for damage to other wikis, the 19 IPs used were:

  • 82.94.187.199
  • 82.194.62.230
  • 82.194.62.235
  • 87.101.240.8
  • 87.236.197.152
  • 160.75.90.69
  • 192.71.66.145
  • 193.188.105.230
  • 193.188.105.235
  • 193.202.63.20
  • 196.20.7.74
  • 200.44.59.59
  • 200.99.204.162
  • 202.55.118.69
  • 202.70.86.211
  • 202.155.24.156
  • 206.220.40.8
  • 212.100.132.146
  • 221.134.142.74

more[]

Seems to be only hitting these two wikis only, today at least. --User? 00:38, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

popped the ones on izzy, going to watching that wiki's rc page more now, this spam sucks, theres no easy way to stop it, and its not even really advertising anything --Uberfuzzy 00:53, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

more old ones[]

Here are some old spams to delete (the first is new):

question[]

At izzyvideo RC I see that Sannse protected "Special:Allpages" for 5 hours. Would someone please explain what that means. I have been wondering if there is a way to block new page generation if necessary. Is that how it's done? Who can do it? (I can handle 10 or 20 a day, but what if it becomes 10 new pages per minute or hour?) --JohnBeckett 03:24, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

there is an extension called ProtectSite that be turned on at a wiki if its warrented. It allows people with Sysop or higher rights (also includes janitors, helpers, staff, maybe some others...) to selectively enable certain temporary protections on various aspects. Create accounts, create pages, edits pages, move pages, uploads (i think thats all of them) can be limited in a way that prevents spam. ie, move pages is normally only allowed to logged in users, with ProtectSite, it can temporarily be limited to Sysops only. same with edits, its normally open to anyone (anon, registered and sysop), but it can be elevated to registered+ or even sysop only) you get the idea. It is not a permanent solution. If a longer term solution is required, Staff have other options in other control systems to make the wiki not editable by anonymous editors, or otherwise control who can do what, and those changes are long term, but that is an extreme solution they usually dont like to enable as it discourages people in the long run. but to answer your first question, when ProtectSite is enacted, it leaves the log message as protecting "Special:Allpages" for the duration of the limitation. --Uberfuzzy 17:40, 7 July 2008 (UTC)
Excellent info -- thanks. I'll pursue this elsewhere. --JohnBeckett 23:16, 7 July 2008 (UTC)
