Wikia versus wiki Edit

It is infuriating to see something like this on a Wikia help page: "every Wikia has 18 namespaces". Surely it should be "every wiki has 18 namespaces". I seem to spend half my life repeating the difference between Wikia and a wiki, which is that a wiki is a site that anyone can edit (including Wikipedia and about a million other websites all over the world), and Wikia is the name of a company that hosts wikis. I know the company name "Wikia" is deceptively similar to the word "wiki", which is probably the main reason why this confusion has propagated. But I think it is important that the two are distinguished from each other unambiguously in Help documentation. 15:43, November 15, 2009 (UTC)

Signature doesn't work properly here, so I will provide a link to my talk page for reference.  ;-) 15:44, November 15, 2009 (UTC)
! I agree. However, the co-founder of Wikia disagrees, and she is where all this "wikia = wiki" stuff came from. Wikia was formerly called Wikicities and each of its wikis was deemed a wikicity, so you can kind of see how after being renamed to Wikia that this occurred. I also agree that we should stay consistent with 'wiki' in help documentation to ensure nobody gets confused. But that'll be another day. Joey (talk) 07:37, November 16, 2009 (UTC)

more info Edit

I recently had a namespace added to the Thief wiki, but was unaware of the subpages option until asked in email if I wanted it. So I think somewhere in the "How do I request a custom namespace?" section, a "subpages in this namespace" explanation should be added.

And perhaps item 4 should read "...and specify whether it should be content, searchable and/or have subpages. --Sxerks 00:20, November 21, 2009 (UTC)

Number limit? Edit

The paragraph saying that wikias are only allotted three custom namespaces has been removed. Does this mean the restriction no longer exists, and that more than three can now be created? ~AgentMuffin:) 05:16, December 6, 2016 (UTC)
