An '''interwiki link''' is a [[Help:Links|link]] to another community. This link is often to another Wikia community, although it may also be to any of the sites listed on the [[w:MediaWiki:Interwiki map|interwiki map]]. Interwiki links are shortcuts that mean you don't have to use the full URL, and they can help simplify the maintenance of links if a community later changes its URL.

To type an interwiki link, you must be using [[Help:Source edit mode|source mode]] in either [[Help:VisualEditor|VisualEditor]] or the [[Help:Classic editor|classic editor]].
== Linking to another Wikia community ==

* To create an interwiki link from your Wikia community to another, use the format <code><nowiki>[[w:c:wikianame:pagename]]</nowiki></code>. So for example if you wanted to link to the Jedi page on Wookieepedia, you would use [[w:c:starwars:Jedi|<code><nowiki>[[w:c:starwars:Jedi]]</nowiki></code>]].

* If you would like to modify the displayed text, follow the same format as with all [[Help:Links|links]], and add a '|' after the link along with the text you want. So, for example, <code><nowiki>[[w:c:starwars:Jedi|test]]</nowiki></code>, would appear as [[w:c:starwars:Jedi|test]].

* Note that non-English communities often have a language code prefix. A German community will often have a URL like <code>de.wikianame.wikia.com</code>, while Spanish communities come under <code>es.wikianame.wikia.com</code>. When you link to one of these communities, simply include the language code prefix. Example: <code><nowiki>[[w:c:fr.wikianame:Page]]</nowiki></code> (note the dot between "fr" and the wikia name).

* To link to a version of your community in different language, use <code><nowiki>[[</nowiki><var>languagecode</var>:<var>pagename</var>]]</code>, e.g.<code>[[<var>fr</var>:<var>fromage</var>]]</code> will link to the "fromage" article on the French-language version of that community.
+
* To create an interwiki link from your Fandom community to another, use the format <code><nowiki>[[w:c:wiki-name:pagename]]</nowiki></code>. For instance, if you wanted to link to The Queen Victoria page on the Eastenders Wiki, you would use [[w:c:eastenders:The Queen Victoria|<code><nowiki>[[w:c:eastenders:The Queen Victoria]]</nowiki></code>]].

* If you would like to modify the displayed text, do as you would with any [[Help:Links|link]]. Add a '|' after the link, followed by your desired text. For example, <code><nowiki>[[w:c:eastenders:The Queen Victoria|test]]</nowiki></code> would appear as [[w:c:eastenders:The Queen Victoria|test]].
* If you leave off the pagename, it will use the pagename of the article that the interwiki link is placed on.

  +
* You might want to actually click on newly-made interwiki links to make sure your spelling's right. Unlike normal links, interwiki links don't check to see whether the target page exists. That means [[w:c:batman:The Joker]] ''looks'' the same as the uncreated [[w:c:batman:Superman needs to stay in Metropolis]].
* Generally such links are placed alphabetically by language code at the end of an article.

  +
* Non-English communities often use [[Help:Language code|language code]] prefixes. You'll typically link to a page on a German community by putting '''de.''' before the domain name: <code><nowiki>[[w:c:</nowiki>'''de.'''<nowiki>wiki-name:Page Name]]</nowiki></code>. It's important to use the name of the page ''in the '''target''' language''. Something like [[w:c:ru.disney:Donald Duck]] probably won't work, but [[w:c:ru.disney:Дональд Дак]] will.
* Note: because different languages can use different names (such as the English cycling.wikia.com and the French cyclisme.wikia.com), interlanguage linking must be manually activated by the Wikia community team. If your topic has a community in a different language at Wikia, and you would like to activate interlanguage linking, please leave a request on the [[w:Interlanguage link requests|Interlanguage link requests]] page on Community Central.

* See [[Help:Interlanguage links]] for more information about this kind of link.

For example, <code><nowiki>[[Wikipedia:Jedi]]</nowiki></code> will be converted to link to the English Wikipedia's "Jedi" article: [[Wikipedia:Jedi]]. These interwiki links look like local links.

* Interwiki prefixes are generally case-insensitive, meaning that [[wikispecies:Lemur]], [[Wikispecies:Lemur]] — and even [[wiKISPECies:Lemur]] — all go to the same place.
* Note that the name used in the interwiki link is not always exactly the same as the domain or sub-domain, e.g. [[MetaWikipedia:]] vs. http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki. Wikia's interwiki map also supports [[MetaWikiMedia:]] and [[m:]] for this community.

  +
* Some communities have multiple interwiki prefixes at Fandom. Consider https://meta.wikimedia.org. Fandom's interwiki map allows [[m:]] ''and'' [[meta:]] ''and'' [[metawikimedia:]] to work. In other cases — like [[wiktionary:]] — there may be only one way to get to a community.
* Many (off-Wikia) MediaWiki help pages are kept on http://mediawiki.org/wiki/, which can be linked to with [[mw:]]. Don't confuse this with the [[Special:Allmessages|MediaWiki:]] [[Help:Namespace|namespace]] for [[Help:System messages|system messages]].

An interwiki link is a link to another community, most often found within the body of an article. It can be to another Fandom community or any of the sites listed on the interwiki map. It's an easy, wikitext way to link to a page on another wiki without having to type out a whole URL.

To type an interwiki link, you must be using source mode in either VisualEditor or the classic editor.

Linking to another Fandom community

  • To create an interwiki link from your Fandom community to another, use the format [[w:c:wiki-name:pagename]]. For instance, if you wanted to link to The Queen Victoria page on the Eastenders Wiki, you would use [[w:c:eastenders:The Queen Victoria]].
  • If you would like to modify the displayed text, do as you would with any link. Add a '|' after the link, followed by your desired text. For example, [[w:c:eastenders:The Queen Victoria|test]] would appear as test.
  • You might want to actually click on newly-made interwiki links to make sure your spelling's right. Unlike normal links, interwiki links don't check to see whether the target page exists. That means w:c:batman:The Joker looks the same as the uncreated w:c:batman:Superman needs to stay in Metropolis.
  • Non-English communities often use language code prefixes. You'll typically link to a page on a German community by putting de. before the domain name: [[w:c:de.wiki-name:Page Name]]. It's important to use the name of the page in the target language. Something like w:c:ru.disney:Donald Duck probably won't work, but w:c:ru.disney:Дональд Дак will.

Linking to an external wiki community

Linking to a Fandom community from an off-Fandom community

Some non-Fandom wikis allow you to link back to a Fandom wiki using one of the following syntaxes:

  • [[centralwikia:w:c:wiki-name:pagename]] (on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia Foundation projects)
  • [[wikia:wiki-name:pagename]]
  • [[wikia:c:wiki-name:pagename]]
  • [[wikiasite:wiki-name:pagename]]

For example, typing [[wikia:muppet:Kermit]] on a community outside Fandom would link to the Kermit page at the Muppet Wiki.
