Is it possible to use images from the Wikimedia Commons in Wikia? If not, will it be made possible any time soon? I find it a terrible waste to keep going to Wikicommons and creating copies of their images for my wiki. יובל מדר 14:15, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

Wikimedia Commons is part of Wikimedia and are on separate servers. It would not be feasable to transclude images from their servers to Wikia wikis. --Splarka (talk) 03:59, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

This has been discussed without much agreement. Usually the problem brought up is that Wikia wikis are of such varied themes that a commons image repository wouldn't be as useful as it is on Wikimedia. Also, we don't really have the inter-wikia community force available to patrol such a commons for GFDL/CC/PD compliancy yet. --Splarka (talk) 03:11, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

Hello altogether! interesting that two people have the same question on the same time. So I understand correctly, that there is no way to just write a link like [[Image:some_commons_picture.jpg]] and have the picture included? But it is allowed to copy it, when I also copy the copyright information? Thanks, Lieven 15:59, 23 December 2006 (UTC)

It would be possible editing the local_settings.php and configuring properly the variables $wgRepositoryBaseUrl and $wgFetchCommonsDescriptions as are described in [1]. But maybe wikia would request permission for using the Commons bandwidth for the images. --Ciencia Al Poder ¿Algo que decir? 17:29, 23 December 2006 (UTC)

It wouldn't work with $wgRepositoryBaseUrl and $wgFetchCommonsDescriptions. Those are for a local commons: "This variable is used when you want to integrate the media-description, stored in a commonswiki, into your wikiproject". Wikimedia's Commons is not local to Wikia, they are on different servers. We'd have to use something like m:InstantCommons (which isn't finished yet). --Splarka (talk) 03:51, 24 December 2006 (UTC)
