On Jan, 30, I asked and got no answer: "Is there any chance that Wikia could support Semantic MediaWiki?". I wonder if there is a better place to ask this question? TIA --Lirielle 10:11, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
- Hi, I've asked the technical team to have a look at this extension and see whether it's one we would support. I'm not sure how long it will take for someone to have time to have a look, but I'll let you know when I hear more. -- Sannse 00:39, 10 February 2007 (UTC)
sure!
I believe the Semantic MediaWiki extension's features would be very useful for some Wikis. Being able to assign properties to articles and then query these would really help to automate summary information, e.g. all Lord of the Rings characters by race displaying their birthdays and with links to their parents. That kind of summary is a hassle to maintain by manual editing!
SMW is an easy enough extension to enable. It adds new database tables and permits arbitrary queries of its tables of properties, which can affect performance.
I work on SMW, so if any Wikia admins are interested in pursuing this, e-mail me. -- Skierpage 00:08, 27 February 2007 (UTC)
- Is there any progress on this?
- I'd also like to see Semantic Mediawiki in use. It would provide a great way of displaying pages in a category, without resorting to the default category view, and would allow certain filtration of results. Fw190a8 03:06, 10 May 2007 (UTC)
Done!
This has now been added. I don't understand how it works myself, so it would be great if someone could test it and make sure all is working correctly. Thanks -- Sannse 18:13, 31 May 2007 (UTC)
- In what wiki as it does not appear on Special:Version page --Cizagna (Talk) 00:03, 1 June 2007 (UTC)
- It doesn't appear to be working on the Forgotten Realms Wiki. The <ask> tag just appears on the page, so it seems to be getting ignored. Fw190a8 09:20, 1 June 2007 (UTC)
- If Semantic MediaWiki is not listed in Special:Version (compare e.g. Ontoworld), then it's not working. Re-read the INSTALL that came with the code, maybe you didn't call enableSemantics() correctly. The same document also has a "Testing your installation" section. -- Skierpage 01:47, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
- Can you please see to it, Sannse? It would be great, as we are eager to implement it --Lirielle 07:17, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
- Pretty please, with a cherry on top! We too are most eager. Thanks in advance. Fw190a8 08:24, 4 June 2007 (UTC)
- Hi all, I've sent a message to the tech guy who was working on this, I'll let you know what I hear as soon as possible -- Sannse 09:54, 15 June 2007 (UTC)
- Is there any news on this? I had it installed on the Wiki at work, and I would really love this to be installed here as well! --Amafirlian 23:55, 29 June 2007 (UTC)
- I gotta agree with Amafirlian, This looks like it could be pretty awesome. WillSWC 05:44, 30 June 2007 (UTC)

Sorry, nothing new yet, I checked with Emil today and he still has it on his list to find out why it's not working... hopefully we will hear soon -- Sannse 11:59, 2 July 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for checking Sannse! --Amafirlian 17:24, 2 July 2007 (UTC)
Sorry, forgot to update this while I was at Wikimania. I talked to the guys who wrote this extension while I was there, who were very keen to see that Wikia is going to use this. But they recommended that we wait a short time for the latest version to be released. They have made a lot of changes to it, and said it would be smoother to install freshly with that new version than to try and fix the problem with the older version. They assured me it would be available soon. I'm sorry it's been such a long wait for this, and I know this is another delay, but hopefully this will mean we have a better system coming soon. -- sannse (talk) 07:40, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for the update. We'll keep waiting and hope for the best. --Lirielle 21:22, 30 August 2007 (UTC)
Small update
Just because ThT asked again, a small update and bit of clarification.
Wikia does intend to install Semantic MediaWiki, so you don't need to ask again because it is going to show up here. As for when, as sannse has said, the creators of Semantic MediaWiki have told Wikia directly to wait till SMW1.0 is released. So, the reason we don't have it on Wikia is hinged on the fact that SMW1.0 has not yet been released. Therefore we shouldn't be hearing any questions or requests about it till SMW1.0 is released in full. So basically, Wikia will have Semantic MediaWiki, but only after SMW1.0 has been released and Wikia has tested it... So don't ask again till a few days after the final SMW1.0 has been released. Now as for when that will happen, the SMW group plans to release in 2 weeks and hopefully 1 week for a Release candidate as I hear in the Mailing list... All questions on any other status of release should be asked directly to the group creating SMW, not to Wikia because we don't have a clue what they are doing and what is their real status. ~NOTASTAFF Daniel Friesen (DanTMan, Nadir Seen Fire) (talk) (tricks) (current topic) Oct 11, 2007 @ 23:16 (UTC)
- Because meanwhile version 1.3 has been released, I dare to ask again about the plans to integrate Semantic MediaWiki in Wikia. --Thomas Tunsch 18:42, 27 September 2008 (UTC)
- Also asked here. • talk • --Thomas Tunsch 19:08, 27 September 2008 (UTC)
- I have installed the SMW extension on museums.wikia.com. Currently we only support SMW version 1.2; however, I will ping our engineers to see about upgrading that (but it may take a bit of time for us to properly evaluate it and upgrade). --KyleH (talk) 01:09, 30 September 2008 (UTC)
