This post is to track issues (bugs, dislikes, quirks, etc.) mentioned by users in the comments of User blog:Sarah Manley/Try the New Wikia Editor. I will start a list that anyone can edit, but I will try to keep it as updated as possible. -- Fandyllic (talk · contr) 22 Jun 2011 11:55 AM Pacific

There are also comments at another blog post by Sarah Manley at Farmville wiki. -- Fandyllic (talk · contr) 22 Jun 2011 10:30 PM Pacific
...and the blog at Community Test wiki. -- Fandyllic (talk · contr) 22 Jun 2011 10:41 PM Pacific
Quick note: I am aware of this list. I'm not sure if I'll edit it directly, but I'll certainly keep an eye on it and make sure we're working on the problems. Kirkburn  talk  contr    12:30, June 23, 2011 (UTC)
Building off what Kirkburn, we are watching this page and plan to do an update of all the feedback early next week once we are able to summarize all of the great input we have received. As for bug reports, we are investigating those listed, but will likely not be able to confirm/give update on everyone listed here. Thanks again and happy testing, --Sarah (help forum | blog) 16:38, June 23, 2011 (UTC)
I've added some notes to the list, especially for incoming and past bug fixes. They're not comprehensive, since we're looking at basically everything on the list. Kirkburn  talk  contr    12:31, August 3, 2011 (UTC)
Thanks. Even a few words about most of the issues is a great help. -- Fandyllic (talk · contr) 6 Aug 2011 11:48 PM Pacific

Master list of New Wikia Editor issues

( ! ) Feel free to edit this list or add new items. If you want to re-organize it, add headers, etc. you can do that also.

Issues preceded by Button comment1 are higher priority problems.

Issues/Problems

  1. Doesn't work with LayoutBuilder.
  2. No space at bottom between customizable toolbar.
  3. Button comment1 Could use an obvious Cancel button to exit editor without changes.
  4. Button comment1 No dropdown list or autocomplete for edit summary.
  5. Edit summaries are not remembered or used for autocomplete list like current/old editor (source and RTE?).
  6. Button comment1 Does not provide a preview of the edit summary → typos cannot be fixed and any links used cannot be checked.
  7. List of templates doesn't correspond to actual templates on wiki.
    • List appears to be hardcoded at MediaWiki:Editor-template-list.
    • Wikia note: we plan to switch this to the top 4 templates on the wiki, but no ETA yet. - Kirkburn
      • Will we still be able to customize MediaWiki:Editor-template-list to the list the four templates we want?
        • Without wishing to turn this into a discussion page: yes, we would keep it customizable. :) - Kirkburn
  8. List of templates shown apparently limited to only 4 at a time (top of list?).
  9. Need to zoom out to see add more templates button.
    • Could be fixed with a scroll bar at the far right once window dimension exceeds screen size.
    • Wikia note: we do have a scrollbar that appears, but it's based on browser height to prevent the scrollbar flashing in and out of existence as. We are looking at tweaking it. - Kirkburn
      • It fails to appear even in full kiosk mode with the zoom as high as 175%
  10. No intuitive way to edit list of templates (if there even is a way).
  11. Adding categories pushes Templates area down off screen with no way to scroll sidebar to get to them.
    • Sidebar scroll bar eventually appears, but you may have to tab away and back.
  12. Wikitext shortcuts accessed from popup via small "More shortcuts" link at top rather than always visible.
  13. Preview drop menu could use a History link.
  14. Button comment1 Preview popup doesn't match real page width so may give a misleading layout preview.
    • Wikia note: should now be fixed. - Kirkburn
  15. Slower than other editors?
  16. "Make new layout from this page" link under Templates area seems misplaced.
    • Wikia note: Since we don't have a 'misc.' bucket, it's the most appropriate location for now
  17. Protected page notice only appears for admin level protection and over the top of the edit content area.
    • Not an issue in Source mode. Any protection notice activates the yellow warning bar; clicking on it brings up the full notice.
    • Wikia note: should be fixed. - Kirkburn
  18. Can't switch between visual and source modes like old RTE.
    • If “enable RTE” is ticked in Special:Preferences, you can switch between modes. If unticked, than you cannot switch between modes: There will be no Visual mode tab.
      • Wikia note: this is essentially unchanged from the previous version.
  19. Button comment1 MediaWiki:Copyrightwarning not visible.
    • Wikia note: now appears in the notifications popup. Not ideal, still something we're thinking about. - Kirkburn
  20. Button comment1 No access to wiki menus (that normally appear to right of wordmark), or wikiactivity, or search bar
  21. Button comment1 In visual mode, copying and pasting section headers does strange things. Sometimes it won't paste, but it screws up a following section. Sometimes it pastes.
    • Wikia note: I believe this bug was fixed. - Kirkburn
  22. Templates with HTML that should change page flow (like <br clear="all" />) are not honored in visual mode.
    • Wikia note: I could write pages on the fun this involves! Safe to say, it's something we're looking at.
  23. In visual mode, some text in popups for template (puzzle piece) and HTML comment (note icon) is light gray on white, so very hard to read.
    • Wikia note: on our list :) - Kirkburn
  24. Can't get to old source editor when New Wikia Editor is enabled on a wiki.
    • Wikia note: not the old layout for it, no. - Kirkburn
  25. Button comment1 No "Follow this page" checkbox.
  26. Source mode editing font size is too big.
    • Font is now smaller, but still has unnecessarily heavy font-weight.
    • Wikia note: It shouldn't have a font-weight applied. - Kirkburn
  27. Display problems at top of screen with long wordmark names or page titles.
    • Wikia note: We've made some simple fixes. We're waiting on Firefox support for a better fix: text-overflow:ellipsis. - Kirkburn
  28. If you go to a redirect page, the target page displays, but when you hit Edit, it tries to edit the page with the redirect.
    • Appears to be fixed.
  29. Added dependencies (AJAX, JS, Lightbox, etc.) on source-only mode (RTE off) that make it slower and less scrollability.
  30. Button comment1 LinkSuggest and TemplateSuggest (?) can make editor slow down to a snail’s pace in source-only mode (RTE off).
  31. Directional arrow keys do not work with LinkSuggest and TemplateSuggest (?) the way they currently do with current RTE and Monobook editor. Must use mouse to make selection.
    • Wikia note: I believe this to be fixed. - Kirkburn
      • The directional arrows are indeed now working. But, LinkSuggest sometimes causes the editor to slow to a crawl.
  32. Button comment1 Can't edit at all with JS disabled.
    • Wikia note: not with the visual editor (for good reason!), but source mode should work. - Kirkburn
  33. You still get 2 scroll bars if your page contents are more than a screen height high and your sidebar has to scroll for more categories and templates.
  34. Button comment1 Need an option in preferences when RTE enabled to make source mode the default.
    • Wikia note: we have plans to remember more choices. - Kirkburn
  35. Button comment1 In source mode with wide screen enabled, lots of the edit area is not clickable and the scroll bar for the edit area seems to be broken and doesn't respond to clicks.
  36. "Follow pages I edit" preference may get reset to turned on.
    • Appears to be fixed.
  37. Button comment1 The new editor doesn't work well in Opera browser.
    • Wikia note: yay Opera. We've done some fixes for it. - Kirkburn
  38. Hard to discover option to either enable or disable blog commenting.
    • Wikia note: fixed. - Kirkburn
  39. Hover over the Publish button, it looks pressed.
    • Wikia note: fix incoming. - Kirkburn
  40. Source font has display problems (some letter look bold, some do not) which may be based on picking an awkward font size.
    • Is this fixed?
    • Wikia note: please screenshot it if not. - Kirkburn
  41. Button comment1 In preview, slider galleries cannot be viewed, making it difficult to figure out whether the text will fit in the space available.
    • Wikia note: should be fixed. - Kirkburn
  42. When creating a new blog, blog title as unnecessary colon like: "User blog:Fandyllic/:Test blog"
    • Wikia note: known, will be fixed. - Kirkburn
  43. System message popups (protected page, etc.) need to support scrolling if the message is multiple lines.
    • Wikia note: should be fixed. - Kirkburn
      • Scrolling for system message popups now working.
  44. Add Publish/Save button and Preview button to Show changes popup.
    • Wikia note: planned. - Kirkburn
  45. Add Publish/Save button and View changes button to Preview popup.
    • Wikia note: under consideration. - Kirkburn
      • Note that Publish/Save already exists in Preview popup. All that is needed to be added is a View changes button.
  46. Preview does not allow Ctrl-clicking of links to open the link in a new tab (the default action in most browsers). However, right-clicking them does bring up a menu that allows you to choose this option.
    • On Mac OS X, ctrl-click is equivalent to right-click (legacy of single-button mouse days), so this may be a Windows only issue or a browser specific issue.
    • Wikia note: we plan to implement a better way to prevent people accidentally leaving the editor, which means we should be able to release this 'soft' block. - Kirkburn
  47. Keyboard shortcuts for "View changes" (Alt-v) and for "Preview" (Alt-p) do not work.
    • Wikia note: IE8 specific issue, which we've been looking into. - Kirkburn
  48. No way to add or edit the edit summary in preview mode, but since there is a "Publish" button, you can easily submit a change without an edit summary.
    • Under the EDITING tab in Preferences, tick the box that says Prompt me if I leave a blank edit summary and this will not happen.
  49. Visual mode appears to add a carriage return to source after any HTML comments.
  50. Preview (or the sidebar) doesn't show categories, if they are only added by templates.
    • Wikia note: improved preview support should be coming. - Kirkburn
  51. Button comment1 Coincidental infrastructure changes that appear to be related to the new editor are breaking other funtionality. See Forum:Reporting missing block notices and missing user right logs. See also Edit buttons (custom and default) vanished on wikis with the new editor at Uberfuzzy's talk page.
    • Wikia note: regressions are fun. It's being looked at. - Kirkburn
  52. There is no "Show list of used templates" link when an editor clicks to "view source" for a page they do not have rights to edit.
Minor
  1. Missing CategorySelect at bottom, but an equivalent is now in sidebar.
  2. Preview button on side rather than bottom that most users were used to.
  3. Quirky display issues when switching between visual and source mode.
  4. Old button bar at top of source mode could be redone to match new look.
    • Wikia note: planned (without breaking existing button customization) - Kirkburn
  5. Return characters at the end of a page are truncated.
  6. GeSHi extension not working in Preview. Works in current RTE and Monobook.
  7. Preferences or cookies to 'remember' your settings of the modules on the right side. It would be nice to keep them minimized if they aren't used as often. Same with fullscreen/module bar.
  8. Preview 'button' doesn't look like a button. It should be classed with .wikia-button so users know to click it rather than it simply looking like a drop-down box.
  9. Missing a cross out button, im not sure if this is already included.
    • Wikia note: it is, click 'More'. - Kirkburn

Suggestions

  1. Move sidebar down a bit so top bar can be widened.
  2. Resizable preview popup window. Not all wikis have the same fixed width.
  3. Need an easy way to add HTML comments (<!-- comment -->) in Visual mode.

The list is getting pretty big. I wonder how many issues they will address before they stop calling it Beta. -- Fandyllic (talk · contr) 22 Jun 2011 1:53 PM Pacific
