Wikis are by concept various. If all wiki ppl creates with this tool will have same advertising banners on top and below the main page this wont do. Let's find a way to give a chance to wiki creators and editors to have under control advertising area in newly created wikis.

Iustin Ivlev

Hi, Iustin. While not a lot of folks like advertisements, Wikia does need them. It's barely, if at all, making a profit with what it already has deployed. The ad team is constantly trying to find new methods and various forms of advertising that will work out to the benefit of the company and the end user. Most of the wikis traffic is anonymous viewers and editors, and all these folks will see the advertising. However, they do have the option to create an account and login and not see advertisements except on the main page. It is however recommended (and there are examples out there) of wikis whose main page is designed to best accomodate the box and banner ad. --CharitwoTalk 12:23, 12 July 2009 (UTC)

I think most wikia contributors understand in the current economic times about the need to pay the bills. I know about the Wikiabanner magic word. Is there any other hint keywords or other assistance we can give to wikia software about ad positioning? ~ Phlox 17:58, 12 July 2009 (UTC)

I'm sure comments, suggestions, and feedback about advertisement will be welcome via Special:Contact. From there it should be passed on to the ad team. --CharitwoTalk 18:03, 12 July 2009 (UTC)

How much?

Would cost to have my own advertising on those adhvertising areas? One way of solving this issue would be this: one has to come with it's own advertising buyers to have decent advertising on his wiki. —This unsigned comment is by Iustin i (wallcontribs) . Please sign your posts with ~~~~!

All ad revenue goes to wikia, not the end user. See also Wikia:Ownership, just because you are an admin or founder of a wiki doesn't entitle you to something like that. Wikia provides free hosting at the cost of advertisements on its wikis. --CharitwoTalk 19:14, 12 July 2009 (UTC)
Here's some easy math. Wikia currently tries to sell advertising for $1 per thousand pageviews (but we don't always succeed). So if a wiki admin wanted to buy the ads on their wiki, they could go to quantcast.com/wikiname.wikia.com see how many pageviews their wiki is generating and estimate the cost of buying all the ads. Gil- do our advertisers pay differently for visits classified as by "addicts" vs. "regulars" vs. passers-by? I see our site (familypedia) is lopsided high on passers by and I wonder if these pay any less/more than other impressions. Don't spend too much time thinking about it, I don't want to blow the $156 we made last month for Wikia all in one place ;-) ~ Phlox 21:37, 15 July 2009 (UTC)
So, fr.guildwars would give Wikia less than 30$ per month ? That is so low... — TulipVorlax 02:47, 16 July 2009 (UTC)
O_o, naruto.wikia would give Wikia $6,500/mo? ~NOTASTAFF Daniel Friesen (DanTMan, Nadir Seen Fire) (talk) (tricks) (current topic) Jul 16, 2009 @ 05:45 (UTC)
So, in theory, some bigger communities could raise the funds (like Wikipedia does) to buy the ad space and keep ads off the site for a year? I'm looking at the site I sysop (The Third Turn), and it's $40 a month using the $1 formula. $600 wouldn't be too hard to raise for if the community is big enough. Is this what some of the staff is hinting? Perhaps, some communities (like Naruto...where $6,5000 is probably too high) could instead raise enough funds to rid the "Front Page" banner that logged in users still see? --DaNASCAT 06:16, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
Sorry, i think i've looked at the wrong number, fr.guildwars has 523.3K page view/month so that give 523.30 $/month.
For Naruto and all of it's subdomains, they have 14700k page view/month so that give 14 700 $ per month ?
That seems like a lot... — TulipVorlax 04:17, 18 July 2009 (UTC)
If http://callofduty.wikia.com/wiki/Special:Mostvisitedpages - the first page made Wikia ~$936 all by itself, and we made Wikia $3320.66 in total in the past month. I think I know why Wikia is now profitable.. ~Joey~ ^Talk^ 00:33, October 11, 2009 (UTC)

Let me open'it for you....

I said that if I will come with some clients for advertising in wiki websites, I should be in title to choose to have in my page only their advertisement! That didn't mean I should take the money for the advertising... I asked what would be the price for someone to have banners in some specific wikis in some specific areas so I can look for companies interested to advertise in my wiki. And you take the money for that advert. I hope this makes my suggestion more easy to grasp... —This unsigned comment is by 86.121.33.51 (wallcontribs) . Please sign your posts with ~~~~!
