Forums: Index General Discussion A few ideas to help wikia
Fandom's forums are a place for the community to help other members.
To contact staff directly or to report bugs, please use Special:Contact.

THESE IDEAS ARE BY THEBEN10MAZTER, NOT RANDOMTIME, RT JUST COPIED THIS INTO A FORUM.

  • One- My friend Roads recently made a blog about wiki wide messages, kinda like staff can do site wide messages except admins can make in the wiki not the whole site, wikia. We could have something like Special:WikiWideMessages.
  • Two- Chatmods can time limit kickbans like for 1 month or a year, or even a day. Its kinda like a regular ban.
  • Three- This one is really not neccesary but admins can lock special places of a page not just the entire page.
  • Four- This one again is not really neccesary but wikia contributers could have rollback user rights given by bureaucrats.
  • Five- Each new found wiki can have a time clock above the random page button and wiki activity button, like the one here, http://ben10.wikia.com/wiki/Special:WikiActivity- i programed it myself. This way users could tell the time quickly by just looking up when there on anypage instead of just signing their name to tell the time.
  • Six- Chat could have a few new features like private chating with multiple people instead of one, censoring curse words and when a person types one of those bad words, on the bottom it says something like, "that word is not allowed, and allowing users to reedit their message to others. This can really take stress off of chatting people.
  • Seven- Fonts- when you are typing a message you could change it to a different font, this is not neccesary though.
  • Eight- Well basically we could have a group of users that have admin and bureaucrat powers that are called SOPs or Sysops on Patrol, kinda like VSTF but these people search for bad bureaucrats or admins and users can report to the SOPs like the VSTF and have a channel. This takes alot of work off of staff members and helpers that have tons of work.
  • Nine- Well this one basically lets admins add their own badges instead of staff members. It would take work off of staff members and make it easier for both staff and admins.

Well please tell me what you think and i would really like you to comment on each feature i said, it would really be nice, but its up to you so its optional. But i would like a response. Thanks! TheBen10Mazter (Talk -Blog -Contribs) 00:26, July 19, 2011 (UTC)

Don't say "wiki contributors" if you mean an IP user. You, me, and even Sannse are all "wiki contributors." Say "IPs" or "unregistered contributors."

I've copied these to a forum so that we don't spam up Sannse's talk with lots of replies, hopefully this can make the discussion better. My view on these:
  1. Messages for all users on a wiki: That's a good idea, community corner kinda does this, but something better to the old Sitenotice system would be good. I'm not too sure about leaving messages on User's talk pages - because that might give some editors who've edited on one wiki once the notification, and they might get annoyed about that - but something better than community corner would be good.
  2. Timed bans on Chat Timed bans would be good on chat, doesn't look like they're on the Feature requests page, so sending feedback with Special:WikiaLabs would be a good idea.
  3. Protection for parts of a page You can do this already, sort of - include part of a page as a template, and lock that template. It'd require a lot of brain surgery to the MediaWiki software to do it another way.
  4. Rollback for IPs Sketchy - IPs change, and it's better if they just make an account.
  5. Realtime clock Seen some wikis do this back in monobook or monaco, I didn't really like it (very distracting), or see the use in it (I use my computer's clock to tell me the time). Users who want it can put it in their own .js file, shouldn't be a default.
  6. Mutli-user private chat Monch has been working on this with his ChatHacks
  7. Fonts On the wiki editor, you can change fonts with CSS. If you're talking about Chat, I'm very happy that there's no custom fonts there, tbh.
  8. SOP "abusive" sysops are one of the things that the VSTF deals with (we can't demote users, but they get reported to staff) - I don't see what advantage this would bring, having a group similar to the VSTF, but with different users would confuse users, and it'd create clashes between each group.
  9. Badges I'm not sure how user-friendly code is for introducing new badges for people who get to a certain criteria, and if it's worth the effort making this interface more user-frendly. Not something I particularly care about

Thanks for copying this over, RandomTime :) A couple of additions to what's already been said
  • Better admin messaging - I know this is on the list of things we'd like to do - hopefully one for the future :)
  • Section protection - interesting idea. I don't know how/if it would work though
  • Bureaucrats can give rollback to logged in contributors, IPs can change or be assigned to two different people - so it wouldn't work to give them special rights
  • I agree with Randomtime that a clock is probably better as a personal feature in your own js
  • Multi-user private chat is also on the request list I believe
  • Admins can change the images of badges and add new tracks - it would be good to see another round of work on badges though, I think there is more we can do to improve them :)
And more generally: we're always looking for ways to improve the features - and one part of that we need to work on is ways to improve on gathering feedback. We have the Wikia Labs buttons, but that's just for a few features. For now, we gather feedback from mail sent to us and other places like talk pages and pass that on to the people building new features. My ideal will be some sort of suggestion box with a "me too" button for adding support to ideas... something for the future maybe :) -- sannse WikiaStaff.png (help forum | blog)

There is an extension for #3: ProtectSection. It's stable even - Tjcool007 (Talk) 18:16, July 21, 2011 (UTC)

I'd also like to point out that multiuser private chatting is currently possible, albeit only from console. Unfortunately, it's not very stable, due to the way the JS is set up for handling private rooms.  Monchoman45  Talk  Contribs  Skystone  18:20,7/21/2011

Moncho- the programming guy. --TheBen10Mazter (Talk -Blog -Contribs) 18:23, July 21, 2011 (UTC)

I am in agreement with RT on all of this basically. Timed bans on chat I am iffy on. Chat is too easy to abuse. If you feel a person is ready to be allowed on chat once more, remove the user right. IP rollback is a big no for me. I have had too much trouble with ips in the past. Have them make an account first.--GodPray  18:26,7/21/2011

Kay. I was just joggin up some ideas. --TheBen10Mazter (Talk -Blog -Contribs) 18:29, July 21, 2011 (UTC)

Hi Ben, these requests are great, and it seems like you've already gotten thorough responses to them (including from Uberfuzzy, who responded in detail to this list when you sent it to Special:Contact). Please keep in mind that our staff is very busy (there are about 3 million Wikians, and 250,000 wikis, remember?). It's great to post requests and ask for feedback, but it's not really fair to us if you post the same list in a bunch of places, and then keep asking all of us to respond to it. Please let one location and one staff member be enough. Thanks again for being such an active and thoughtful community member! :) --Dopp WikiaStaff.png (help forum | blog) 20:02, July 22, 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the response! Dopp is so nice! She should get like a award! --TheBen10Mazter (Talk -Blog -Contribs) 21:55, July 22, 2011 (UTC)
