Hello!

We would like to ask you about the "Random Wiki" banners at the bottom of each Wikia page. Is it a free service or it has a paid subscription? Could you please send us the information concerning that question?

Thank you.

World of Battles team.

P.S.

We've tried sending you the same question through your "Contact Us" form, but the error occured both times, so we're posting our inquiry here.

Special:Contact has been acting strange lately. As for your question, I'm pretty sure you do not need to pay to have your wiki included, but you may have to contact staff through Special:Contact when the form is fixed, or here on Community Central. Tagging Staff needed. --Dser (wall | email) 19:15, 11/24/2011
The banners (pictures) it self are from the spotlight service, which is free but has a lot of requirments. See Spotlight. If your asking about the random wiki button, I'm pretty sure it takes you to a wiki at random, as I don't think some of the wikis are paying. But I could be wrong.

Actually, I've tried the "Random Wiki" button, and I believe it only takes you to some of the best wikis. I have never encountered any abandoned wikis when I pressed the button.

Looking through some wikis, your right. Only wikis that are the best. Head of Ravenclaw (Talk | Contribs) 20:44, November 25, 2011 (UTC)
The button points you to Special:RandomWiki/number. The number seems to be permanent per wiki; e.g. Central's variable is 177 and swfanon's is 644. TK999 20:46, November 25, 2011 (UTC)
I always wondered if Wikia wikis had some kind of id number. Maybe this is it? -- Fandyllic (talk · contr) 1 Dec 2011 2:26 PM Pacific
Yes, a wikis ID number can be found on the Special:WikiStats page, there even used to be a page(xml) that had all 100k+ listed in order of creation along with the number. And I think that the ID is used on the Random button to keep the "random wikis" in the same category, (I tried on a gaming wiki, and all I got was other gaming wikis).--Sxerks 22:07, December 1, 2011 (UTC)

(reset indent) To answer the original questions. Spotlights are completely free. Head of Ravenclaw is correct in that is the page to request one. The random wiki function does indeed have a limited pool of selected wiki IDs. It made more sense for it to be truly random back when there were only a few thousand wikis on Wikia, but now we want to be sure passersby see examples of built-up wikis that serve as good examples of organization and content. --daNASCAT WikiaStaff.png (help forum | blog) 02:03, December 14, 2011 (UTC)

Good straightforward answers. Thanks. -- Fandyllic (talk · contr) 14 Dec 2011 1:58 PM Pacific
