Wikicities are wiki communities creating free content with the MediaWiki software. These are hosted for free by Wikia, the company which runs the project. Anyone is free to start a new Wikicity in accordance with the Wikicity creation policy and terms of use.

Wikicities was founded by Angela Beesley and Jimmy Wales in October 2004. It celebrated its first birthday on November 2, 2005.

The MySQL database of every Wikicity is available for download under the terms of the GFDL.

Statistics

The Special:Statistics page on every Wikicity provides basic data on the number of pages on each wiki.
Wikistats has details on the number of edits, pages, users, site visits, and more, for every active Wikicity (updated weekly).
Alexa has details on the traffic rank of Wikicities compared to other sites (toolbars for IE and Mozilla browsers).
There are daily Webalizer stats for every wiki at http://<name of the wiki>.wikicities.com/webalizer/
