Koopa Troopas (ノコノコ Nokonoko?), often named simply Koopas, or Troopas, are a recurring species throughout the Mario franchise. They first appeared in Super Mario Bros., although have predecessors named Shellcreepers that first appear in Mario Bros..

Physical description[]
Koopa Troopas are a tortoise-like species and the primary member of the Koopa species. They generally have a yellow body and wear a Koopa Shell varying in color, though is usually green.
Behavior[]
While Koopa Troopas, like Goombas, are some of Mario's most common foes. While several Koopa Troopas are the main footsoldiers of Bowser's army, Koopa Troop, there are still several Koopa Troopas who are not affiliated with Bowser, and some are characters who even appear as allies, such as Koopa the Quick, Kooper, Koops, the Roving Racers, Kuzzle, and more.
Whenever a Koopa Troopa is stomped, it temporarily retreats into its shell. While their shell color is often just an aesthetic difference, it can also indicate a difference in behavior, namely how in the Super Mario series, the Koopa Troopas wearing a Green Shell walk off platforms whereas Red Koopa Troopas do not walk off them and turn around upon reaching the edge of a platform.
Variants[]
The most recurring variant of Koopa Troopas are Koopa Paratroopas, which debuted alongside Koopa Troopas in Super Mario Bros.. Paratroopas each have a pair of wings, and turn into a Koopa Troopa upon being stomped.
Koopa Troopas have a larger yet somewhat less common variant named Giant Koopa, which first appears in Super Mario Bros. 3.

Trivia[]
- Koopa Troopas made a cameo appearance in the NES game Zoda's Revenge: Startropics II. In the game a man delivers a pizza to the protagonist, Mike Jones while riding a Koopa Troopa.
- Although Koopa Troopas did not appear in the Super Mario Bros. (film), the Goombas in the film were originally going to be called Koopa's Troopas, as shown in official artwork.[1]
- Golden Koopa Troopas didn't appear until New Super Mario Bros. 2 in 2012, but a golden Koopa shell appeared prior in Super Mario Galaxy (2007).
- As shown in Super Mario World, Koopa Troopas can not only survive without their shells, but actually wear clothing underneath them.
- Koopas are really well-known because of their shells, since the shell has appeared as items in Mario Kart.
- There are some rumors indicating that Koopas are killed of two hits. Actually, it only takes one, as seen in World & 64.
- Its Japanese name, Nokonoko, is an onomatopoeia for a slow-moving object.
