History

Set a hundred million years into the future, Galactus and his herald Nova investigated a bizarre rearrangement of the stars and galaxies, during which he came upon the Earth. Finding that human life has apparently become extinct, he no longer felt bound by his pledge to spare the planet and at long last devoured it. His explorations of the dying universe found him in final combat against Ecce, the Watcher who had witnessed his "birth" and regretted not killing him when he had the chance. After a thousand years of combat, Galactus drained the collection of the last living planets in the universe to defeat the rogue Watcher. Recognizing that the universe was falling into entropy rather than initiating another "Big Crunch" that would recreate the universe, Galactus cracked open his armor. His eons of pent-up energy causes a new Big Bang, which Nova survived to become the new universe's Galactus.[1][2]

Notes

  • Epic Illustrated was cancelled before John Byrne could finish the Last Galactus Story. In an interview with comicbookresource.com, Byrne explained the story would have ended with Galactus and Ecce battling each other while the universe dies around them. After Galactus defeats Ecce, he releases his energy and creates a Big Bang to create a new universe, and Galactus' Herald Nova becomes the Galactus of this new universe.[2]
