Sapphire Stagg was the wealthy socialite daughter of industrialist Simon Stagg.

She met and fell in love with one of Stagg's former employees, Rex Mason, and remained with him even when he began adventuring as the super-hero Metamorpho. Simon Stagg greatly disapproved of Sapphire's devotion to Mason, and was always scheming to break them apart; usually by putting Metamorpho into harm's way.

When Simon Stagg developed a chemical procedure to return Rex Mason to normal, Sapphire witnessed how her loved man decided to spend years in isolation in order to cure himself. In the meantime, Sapphire continued her life by moving out of her father's house and she bid for an ancient mansion that was on sale near Gotham City. However, one of the owners of the place didn't want the house to be sold and he hired a killer by the codename Bounty Hunter to kill all the bidders for the mansion. When the hit list became known, Stagg decided to take Metamorpho out of the process on the early stages in order to have him help protect Sapphire from the killer. Unfortunately, Sapphire was too reckless and she risked her life whe she went to the mansion by herself. She would've been killed by Bounty Hunter if Metamorpho and Batman had not showed up to save her.[1]

Some time later, Rex and Sapphire had an argument, after which Rex disappeared. Concerned about her beloved, Sapphire hired Batman's services for one million dollars that would be used for charity in order to locate Metamorpho.[2]

After a long absence, Sapphire was reunited with Metamorpho, but her father used the Orb of Ra to kill Rex Mason. Desperate, Sapphire got help from Dr. Helga Jace, who had been working on a cure for Metamorpho and together, they took Rex's lifeless body to the Outsiders Headquarters, where they asked the heroes help to revive Metamorpho.[3] Like this, Dr. Jace and Sapphire Stagg travelled along with the Outsiders to Egypt, where Metamorpho was revived by the meteor which first transformed him.[4] When Rex learned that the second exposure would mean that his condition became permanent, he was saddened, but Sapphire stopped him from brooding by proposing marriage to him and he gladly agreed.[5] Shortly after, Rex and Sapphire informed her father of this decision and Simon only agreed to let them continue after Metamorpho saved his life.[6] As Rex and Sapphire readied for their wedding, his former foe, Maxwell Tremaine, sent his shape-changing lackey, Even Steven to kidnap Sapphire. Even Steven betrayed Tremaine and killed the both of them. After this events, Sapphire and Rex finally got married, and she became Sapphire Stagg Mason.[7]

Afterwards, Rex and Sapphire had a son and they called him Joey. The kid had inherited the transmutative properties of his father, but could also use these abilities to affect the chemical properties of other objects as well.

For a time, Sapphire believed that Metamorpho had died, and her father arranged for her to marry a man named Java. Java was an apish man, and one of Simon Stagg's experiments. Although she remained loyal to Java, her heart always belonged to Rex. Eventually, Sapphire discovered that Metamorpho was alive and was working in Paris as a member of Justice League Europe. The two have since reunited.
