The past year at Wikia has been a busy one with lots of new features, tools and community members! We are continually working to make Wikia a fun place to meet, collaborate and build wikis with people who love the topics you love.

While we always work to develop solid features, we also regularly take dedicated time to review and resolve reported bug issues. This past week our Engineering Team focused on resolving over 100 bugs, while others in the office used the time to talk about ideas for future features on Wikia.

The community has been an amazing resource for finding and reporting bugs across the site, and we greatly appreciate this. If you run into a bug on Wikia, please let us know. We will continue to review and resolve bugs as quick…

If you haven't noticed, Wikia is quite an international place. With wikis in 226 languages, we think it's time to cheer on our international wiki communities which are growing so quickly. Topping the ranks, with an impressive 1000% growth in traffic in 2009, are .

Overall, Spanish and German language wikis have experienced tremendous growth recently with active users across the 10,000 Spanish wikis increasing 35% since December 2009. Que Bueno! One of the most stellar Spanish wikis has been WikiRespuestas, an answers wiki, which has almost 3 million monthly pageviews and more than 50,000 questions (with more than 50% answered)! There are currently more than 6,000 German wikis, including Drakensang 2, which has seen explosive growth in weekl…

Ever wish you knew as soon as a new blog post went live? Or when a new page was added to your favorite category? Well now you can!

Today we released a new "followed pages" feature, which allows you to receive notification when there are changes to a category page or when a new blog post is submitted. So now you can watch this blog and get an email whenever there is a new post. This is a great way to keep up to date with all the latest news and happenings on your wiki and across Wikia.

Followed pages also gives you new ways to follow changes on your favorite wikis. On your header you will see that "Watch" has been replaced by "Follow". When you choose to follow a page, it will be added to your followed pages list, and the most recently chang…

"By its very definition, Glee is opening yourself to joy." If this is a saying you live by, or you happen to spend every Tuesday glued to your TV, then you just might be a Gleek! If you have no idea what I am talking about, head over to our Glee wiki for a proper translation!

Glee, a Fox TV musical-drama show, has its very own wiki here on Wikia, and it has seen a ton of growth in the last few months thanks to all our dedicated Gleeks. Fun additions such as Achievement Awards, a Twitter account, a Glee Answers site, and a growing Facebook fansite. have all helped to bring in new community members.

To celebrate our Gleetastic users, Glee Wiki is giving away tickets to see Glee Live in LA on May 22, 2010! We'll fly the lucky winner and a frie…

Last year, I was redesigning the main page for new wikis, and I noticed a weird thing. There was a line on the main page that said "This wiki was founded in (Month) (Year)." I looked at what people were doing on that page, and I found that a number of people were filling in the month and year, but keeping the parentheses, like this: "This wiki was founded in (March) (2008)." Seriously. That happened a lot.

People did the same thing in the Featured article section. There was a message in italics -- Add your featured article in this box! People added their featured article... and they wrote it all in italics.

What I learned was: If you're going to give people a format, don't give them the wrong idea about how to fill it out. It might seem obvious…

Our Iowa datacenter is going to be taken offline for maintenance tomorrow morning (Saturday 10 April 2010) between 6 AM GMT and 8 AM GMT. You will still be able to edit normally during this time, but some users may notice slower loading times.

The reason for the maintenance is that our ISP is working on their fiber links and will briefly be unavailable. We will route traffic to our San Jose and London datacenters to keep the site running while the work is done.

    Thanks

    Artur

Wikia is celebrating the creation of its 100,000th wiki community!

We have come a long way since Angela Beesley Starling and Jimmy Wales created 'Wikicities' in 2004. It has been an amazing journey, and Wikia now has communities on topics ranging from Sewing to Pop Tarts, Call of Duty to FarmVille, and Glee to Geek Feminism.

    A couple of significant milestones...

    • Wikianswers was our first wiki and started in the Fall of 2004. Wikianswers now has approximately 520,000 questions and 148,000 answers.
    • Wikicities already had 100 wikis in 2005 when the popular wikis Uncyclopedia and Memory-Alpha decided to join us.
    • With nearly 1000 wikis in 2006, we changed our name from Wikicities to Wikia.
    • WoWWiki, EverQuest 2 Wiki, and FFXIclopedia joined Wikia in 2…
