Emoticons are small pictures that usually depict a face, but they can also depict other things (e.g. hands, fingers, or the like). A user can use emoticons to give a message an undertone in order to better emphasize certain aspects or states of mind. Sarcasm, irony or cynicism can also be better expressed using emoticons, as you normally cannot infer the tone of the author's tone from a message.

Chat[]

The most common place to use emoticons on FANDOM chat. Everyone involved in the chat can enter emoticons by entering the appropriate abbreviations. These abbreviations, in turn, are specified on the MediaWiki Emoticons page, where admins can also add further emoticons.

In order to add an emoticon to the chat, the future emoticon must first be uploaded to FANDOM or another platform. Now you have to copy a link to the future emoticon after the first point of a list on the MediaWiki:Emoticons page. Then you just have to type in the abbreviations in an inserted list directly under the link. Each abbreviation requires one line.

In addition, all chat emoticons are reduced to 19x19 pixels.

Message Wall and talk pages[]

If you want to use emoticons on a Message Wall or a talk page, you have two options.

One option is to copy the emoticon's link into the text, similar to how you do it on the MediaWiki page. However, this is very cumbersome, as the links are usually very long and are also individual for each emoticon.

A second and simpler option, on the other hand, is to create a template that only contains the emoticon as an image that you want to use later as such. This picture must not be aligned to the left or right and should not be larger than 22x22 pixels, otherwise it will go too far beyond the line and cause unsightly line spacing. In addition, the title of the template page should not be too long, since you have to enter the accolades for the title so that the picture can be inserted.
