- 6–18 February – The Olympic Winter Games are held in Grenoble, France.
- 27 March – Yuri Gagarin, 34, Soviet cosmonaut dies.
- 10 June: Italy wins the UEFA European Championship by defeating Yugoslavia, 2–0 in the final game replay at the Olympic Stadium in Rome, Italy.[2]
- 21 August – A joint Warsaw Pact invasion led by the Soviet Union strikes down the Prague Spring movement in Czechoslovakia.[3]
