Recently my wiki is having a problem with tagging an article. And I have witnessed the same thing happening with other wikis, such as in the Disney Wiki I can't tag article like Man from Bambi. Is there a way I can fix it, or this is just a glitch?
What's on your mind?

Technical Updates
Hey gang!
It's been a while since the last one of these, as the releases made since the end of November have been big enough for their own staff blog (Discussions search), reverted due to bugs, or mostly backend stuff that weren't worth highlighting. We also had a multi-week release freeze in there for the holidays.
Let's dive in with some releases in the past week or so!
Several fixes for LinkSuggest went out recently. More specifically: It now no longer attempts to show you suggestions after the pipe is added, the window is no longer too small and wraps page titles now, and it once again shows transclusion suggestions for non-template namespaces.
Fatal exceptions on Category pages were corrected
A bug preventing bottom toolbar customization was fixed.
Fixed: For pages with multiple galleries, the gallery builder was inserting images on the first one in the page, rather than the intended gallery.
The Social Activity feed no longer shows non-functioning action links for users without the permissions to use them.
The Social Activity feed now shows Discussions activity
The Abuse Filter log now correctly shows post-migration history for wikis moving from Legacy to UCP.
Currently being worked on:
Social Activity tabs for anonymous users, for better moderation of their non-edit contributions
Better block data display for administrations on user pages
Just Updated
Hey gang!
We haven't had one of these in a while as we are starting to switch gears from UCP migrations (set to finish in the next month+) to the unified experience work. As announced in the Community Checkpoint today, we'll begin to talk with you soon about the unified experience and the order in which the different components of it will become available.
Here are some highlights from the past few weeks:
The Gallery fixes finally went live! That includes: No more galleries with gaps around images or misaligned images, zoomed-in images, infoboxes with missing galleries, or thumbnails that are too big or too small. Shared images should display again in galleries and in lightboxes.
Notifications for article comments are live! With a few caveats: Notifications about anon comments still say "Undefined" instead of "A Fandom user". That'll be fixed. You can't yet follow all comments for an entire article, only individual comments, so you get notified if you receive a reply for your comment, or a new reply under your reply, or a reply under a comment you follow for other reasons. Notifications work on-site, on mobile, and in email.
Mods+ can now (un)hide deleted content on Message Walls. For that, an option has been added within a dropdown. The selection sticks from wiki to wiki.
A severe issue was fixed where different data clusters didn't properly sync user data, leading to issues like users showing as nonexistent if they don't have edits on a wiki.
You can once again see more than 10 notifications in the on-site dropdown.
Long wall messages can be edited again. The scroll bar has been restored so the Save button can be reached.
An issue was fixed where IP blocked users saw block notices claiming their account, rather than their IP, was blocked.
We've once again fixed issues with wiki database dump creation, so some wikis that weren't getting their dump should have it now.
A bug was fixed that prevented users from finding localized special pages via Search.
The "Closed wiki" page on mobile displays properly now.
An issue was fixed where Special:JSPages was cleared upon UCP migration. Pages would only appear there after they were edited.
ListUser once again shows users that don't have special rights on legacy wikis.
Gamepedia PRO users once again get an ad-free experience
Issue fixed where message wall notifications would say username instead of addressing you directly. (This only happened if your name has a space in it)
Issue fixed that sometimes caused the favicon upload option to escape from the ThemeDesigner and float below it instead.
Issue fixed where categories with special characters in them displayed incorrectly in the category bar in the article footer.
Issue fixed where video play buttons on videos embedded in an infobox (but not in a gallery) didn't display properly.
Issue fixed where text on articles flowed too closely to embedded images.
Issue fixed where article comment links couldn't deal with usernames ending in special characters.
Issue fixed where article comments containing multiple ? (which is fairly common) caused errors, preventing the post from being published.
importArticles once again allows spaces in import lines.
The plainlinks class should once again hide the arrow icon behind external links.
And, since @Hollowness asked, here's a picture of Louie in his holiday bowtie...
Have a great Thanksgiving, those who celebrate it! Fandom US will be off next Thursday and Friday, so responses from US-based employees will be delayed. Additionally, I'm out most of next week. Toodles!
Hey gang!
On November 3rd at roughly 10:19am US Eastern Time, a code deploy caused a fatal exception for all Fandom and Gamepedia wikis on the new platform.
The error appeared as an "InvalidArgumentException" to users.
The offending code has been rolled back and the platform is back to normal, as of 10:40am US Eastern Time. If you see weird CSS issues, that's due to caching and should resolve on its own.
Sorry for the brief disruption!
Hey gang!
Welcome to our first Release Highlights post on Discussions :)
This week, the teams mostly released bug fixes.
Performance Fixes
A number of major performance fixes were deployed on the backend, correcting some high error rates and other issues. We have more work on that currently in flight.
Video Renaming
An issue that prevented users from renaming any videos has been partially fixed. There will still be an error if the new name contains . , but renaming works in all other cases.
Syntax Highlighting in 2017 Code Editor
Syntax highlighting can once again be turned off in the 2017 code editor - a necessary fix since the highlighter could cause performance issues on long pages.
Special Page Formatting
Bullet list formatting for second level entries has been fixed for special pages, which makes them easier to read again.
Comment Display on Social Activity
An issue was fixed where legacy comments that got migrated to the UCP and then edited, or that received replies, showed in their full length on the social activity feed. Comments created on the UCP are truncated after ~100 characters to keep the feed legible. This is now applied to legacy comments that appear in the feed as well.
LinkSuggest fix
LinkSuggest in the 2010 editor works again even when syntax highlighting is enabled.
Needs More Polish, Yes?
Page titles containing Polish characters that broke post migration and rendered links invalid have been restored.
EDIT: Next Week...
We have a bunch of fixes related to galleries and images in infoboxes. They did not make the cutoff for today's release, so they'll be deployed on Tuesday. Update: Delayed to Thursday's release due to platform crash in today's release.
And last but not least...
This is Louie. He lives with me now.
A rather old wiki was overloading their cache with some weird category issues unique to the wiki, causing their cluster to crash, which brought down parts of the platform.
That happened early morning on October 28th (US time) before the wiki migrated to the UCP and then again October 29th in the early morning (US time). We temporarily disabled the category feature that was affected on that wiki specifically and changed its cache to temporarily resolve the issue.
A thorough investigation as to the systemic cause and a resolution for it is underway with high priority. Once that fix is deployed, this wiki will never cause this issue again.
We will not be providing any details on the wiki which caused the issue or details of the cause until the fix is applied.
The process of migrating Community Central wikis (except ZH) from Forums to Discussions will begin this Thursday, October 29th.
After the migration, we will be using a combination of Discussions (for social support) and DPLForum (for technical wiki support).
This post is simply a notice and replies have been disabled.
Hey gang!
Lots of stuff released this week, so let's dive in...
Very long edit summaries
The bug causing edits with very long summaries to not display correctly on Recent Changes has been fixed.
Editor preference de-sync
The editor preference de-sync between legacy and UCP was corrected. As a result of the fix, some of your editor preferences did get changed.
Blogs in Recent Changes when blogs are disabled
A bug causing weird Recent Changes artifacts to appear for old blogs made before blogs were disabled on a particular wiki has been corrected.
Anon wall message bug
Anonymous users can no longer edit message wall posts when anonymous contributions are disabled. This was caused by a permissions bug, which has been corrected.
importArticles works again
An urgent fix for importArticles was applied and it now works correctly again.
FormatNum fixed
FormatNum was not working correctly, due to the function being baked into MediaWiki and then conflicting with the now deprecated FormatNum extension that we had ported over from legacy. We disabled the deprecated extension.
Article Comments permissions fixed
Anonymous users can no longer make comments on wikis with anonymous contributions disabled.
Localized login fix
The login page no longer displays as English for non-English users entering it from the global navigation entry point.
License dropdown fix
The license dropdown in the upload modal on Special:NewFiles works again!
Upcoming and Known Issues
- LINK SUGGEST IS OUT OF QA AND SLATED FOR RELEASE ON TUESDAY!!!!! Some of you know this feature as AutoComplete.
- Gadgets are currently read-only due to a content review bug which affects them. Once the bug is fixed, we will turn off read-only for them and let you get back to editing them.
- Some message wall migrations broke halfway through, due to incredible content volume. There is currently an urgent fix in the works.
Progress
As of Monday, the UCP was serving 50% of all pageviews on the Fandom and Gamepedia wiki networks. This is a major milestone for migrations, which are set to reach 90% pageviews at the end of the month.
A Personal Note
Yesterday, the Community Manager who inspired me to get into this field, David "DeeJ" Dague, announced he was leaving Bungie after exactly 9 years of service as a member of the Destiny community team. A lot of what you have seen here in the past 18 months and on Gamepedia since 2017 for communications and community management are inspired by his style, which is seriously top-notch. He even wrote me a personal reference that I submitted along with my resume when I applied to be the Community Manager for Gamepedia.
If you have somebody who inspires you to take chances and explore new worlds, take a moment to tell them how much you appreciate them.
A Random Observation
For the first time in two months, Andrewds1021 didn't get the last word on the previous thread before I closed it for the next one. It's weird not seeing the Earth profile picture atop the list.
Happy Friday, gang!
We have a lot to cover, so let's get into it.
User Talk Page Notifications
These now work on the UCP!
Keyboard Shortcuts
All the old Fandom keyboard shortcuts are now functioning properly on the UCP
Special:Community
Special:Community has been ported to the UCP with a very nice update that allows us to better surface Wiki Managers to each assigned community.
Article Comment Protection
UCP wikis can now have a special level of protection turned on that prevents non-email confirmed and non-autoconfirmed users from engaging in Article Comments, separate from those users being prevented from editing.
Editing deleted or locked Discussions
Mods and up can now make edits to deleted or locked Discussions posts without having to first undelete or unlock them.
Create New Page in your preferred editor
Create New Page now respects your editor preference.
Blocked user data fix
Special:BlockList is no longer incorrectly missing users blocked before 2018
Other notes
- Forums migration has nearly completed. The final non-staff wiki to migrate will be Tardis, which migrated incorrectly earlier and had to be rolled back. Community Central wikis will be moving to Discussions later this month.
- Gamepedia migrations are going very well and should be complete except for a few one-offs next week.
- LinkSuggest is still undergoing QA. The feature is not quite behaving as it should in some of our test cases.
- The bug fix for editor preferences being mismatched between Legacy and UCP is currently undergoing QA.
Hey gang!
We've got some exciting updates to highlight today, so let's dive right in.
2010 Editor
As you should be aware, the 2010 Editor (as seen on Gamepedia as the Source Editor) is now live on the UCP. The preference is called Source Editor, while the Source Mode of the 2017 Editor has been moved to Visual Editor - Source Mode.
We already released a fix for buttons appearing invisible on some lighter themed wikis.
Per Page Article Comments Toggle
This is a net-new feature we've added as part of the UCP work, thanks to a user request: You can now disable article comments on a per page basis. In the Editor, the Commenting checkbox controls whether or not article comments are enabled on that particular page. Uncheck it to disable them.
Protection Revocation Bug
We fixed an odd bug that was causing any edit on a protected page from an authorized usergroup to remove the page protections.
PortableInfobox Bug Fix
We corrected a bug that was causing some pages with PortableInfoboxes to not load.
Upcoming
- The remaining Global Shortcuts will be in the next release. They just missed getting staged for today's release, so they should come out on Tuesday.
- Special:Community is in QA now and should release to the UCP soon.
Happy Thursday, gang!
Today is a big one, as we've released the final critical bug fix for the Pause Plan as well as the Social Activity Feed.
Social Activity
On Recent Changes, you'll see a tab structure now, allowing you to cycle between Wiki Activity, Social Activity, and Image Activity.
Wiki Activity is normal Recent Changes, with wiki-focused activity. Note: It is not Special:WikiActivity from legacy.
Social Activity is updates related to Message Wall and Article Comments (for now).
Image Activity brings Special:NewFiles into the Recent Changes world, giving you another entry point for at-a-glance moderation for images.
This is our first release of this feature. There are further enhancements already in development for upcoming release, but we want to build this with your feedback. Please let us know how you use it, how you'd like to use it, what you like, what you don't like, etc., all with an aim toward improving the feature!
Lua Imports from Dev
We have fixed a bug that was causing Lua imports from Dev to fail intermittently. This was one of the critical bugs mentioned in the UCP Migration Pause.
TemplateData
The TemplateData extension has been installed on the UCP.
Article Thumbnails
Imageserving will no longer pick the wrong thumbnails for articles. Transparency update: We've reopened this ticket, as the fix was not fully successful.
Posts link
The Posts link on user profiles will now correctly lead to the user's social contributions.
Upcoming
The 2010 Editor is very nearly done. Once it releases, we will be unpausing UCP Migrations, with the same batches notified before the pause resuming thereafter.
Happy Friday, Sailers! How is your Pause going? Need some weekend music?
Recently, we had some nice changes deployed which I think you'll like, so let's jump into them!
Bad Company (among reported posts)
There are new entry points to the Reported Queue now. The Admin Dashboard and bottom toolbar both have links to reach the queue. This will help mods+ to use the feature more often (or realize it exists for the first time). Thank you to Mira Laime for that joke. Go listen to Bad Company, the hit single on the record Bad Company, by the band Bad Company.
Time is on my side, yes it is (and on your tooltips)
Discussions and Message Walls now have actual date and timestamps on hover, rather than "3 days ago" as it stands now. Please go listen to some Rolling Stones this weekend.
The files are alright (and can be uploaded again)
The extension TimedMediaHandler has been installed on the UCP, resolving a number of file support issues, including the re-enabling of ogg file uploading. Cheap Trick is another band I recommend for this weekend.
Pre tags
Use of the pre element in CSS styling will no longer cause editor display issues. This is one of the major fixes mentioned in the migration pause mitigation plan.
Template Editing
Templates no longer open in visual editor if you have your editor preference set to source editor, as intended.
Source editor background
The source editor now has a solid background, reducing legibility issues on communities with "busy" custom backgrounds.
Get back to where you once belonged (on the mobile site)
If you're on a mobile device and use the link to view the desktop site, we give you a similar link to return to the mobile site, if you so choose. If you don't understand the reference in this section title, please spend your weekend listening to the entire Beatles catalog.
You're never alone (with image sharing)
EN wikis migrated to the UCP which share images from a non-EN wiki will now have those images display correctly. Again, Bad Company. Very underrated band with some absolutely incredible songs.
Highway (to deeplinking) Star
You can now copy a deeplink to any comment or comment reply on the UCP. Go listen to some songs from Deep Purple this weekend. See? There's the deep link to deeplinking. It was a very deep joke about deepness.
Band on the Run (with their mobile devices)
The issue that caused select pages to throw errors on mobile has been resolved. Wings is also a good band with some great songs, especially if you dig the Beatles.
Upcoming
Social Activity and 2010 Editor development are going well :)
Happy Thursday, gang, and welcome to the first Release Highlights post of the Stanley Cup Playoffs!
Let's dump the puck into the zone and chase it with some highlights...
Achievements
Achievements has been deployed to the UCP. It is the same experience you know from the legacy platform, but now running on the backend tech used by Gamepedia's own Achievement system. This unblocks migration for many wikis on the legacy platform.
In Phase 2, we'll be giving this feature another design pass to make it more engaging.
JS Review
JavaScript review issues have been resolved and you can have wiki-specific custom JS now. Be sure to contact Fandom Staff to request the site JS flag on your wiki if you don't have it set yet.
Special:Contributions
There was an issue with styling not showing correctly on this page and that has been fixed.
H2 underlines
The underline from H2 formatting no longer collides with infoboxes.
Page vs wiki CSS classes
Targeting page-specific CSS has been fixed.
Upcoming
Semantic MediaWiki is undergoing final acceptance testing, which will unblock migrations for wikis making use of it on the legacy platform. Please note that our policy on the application of this extension has not changed and it will not be enabled on further wikis.
Additional Note
Starting with the following batch of wikis, banner notices for upcoming migrations to the UCP will be enabled at least 2 weeks ahead of time (absent special circumstances). This follows feedback from admins about needing a little more notice to prepare.
Happy Thursday, gang!
This afternoon, I pause to reflect how we would be getting to see the Opening Ceremonies of the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games today if not for the current health crisis. I know we'll reconvene to enjoy the games next year, but it's sad to see the day come and go without the Olympic spirit on full display.
With that, on to release highlights...
Change to the UCP Editor UI
Thanks to awesome feedback from all of you, great iteration from our Design team, and brilliant execution by our engineers, we have revamped part of the editor workflow to be more streamlined.
You'll notice that the edit summary modal has been removed and the actions from that modal have been moved to the bottom of the editor, along with the Save button. Summary, See Changes, Preview, Cancel, and Save now live at the bottom of the screen.
I'm told that Firefox's accessibility checker now rates the UCP Editor as accessible following this change. It's just another step on our road to having a more accessible platform for more people.
Syntax Highlighting fix
Thanks to Himmalerin and others, the syntax highlighting toggle bug has been corrected and you can now turn it back on properly if you turn it off. Cheers!
Wiki-specific JS
Now available on the UCP! If your wiki doesn't have it enabled already, please contact Fandom Staff. Update: unfortunately, we've run into one more blocker on this - but we anticipate it being fixed fairly quickly!
Update on the renaming
The Great Confluence of Names (AKA Login Systems Merger) is still ongoing. We ran into some snags last night and we're cleaning them up now. It should be done shortly, allowing one account to cover Fandom, Wikia.org, and Gamepedia, while also letting Gamepedia-primary users to unlink from Twitch for the first time in a few years.
Thanks for your patience on this one. It's been a very difficult piece of the UCP project to crack.
Upcoming items
The first wave of Discussions enhancements are approaching final testing.
Work on the UCP version of Blogs continues.
Semantic MediaWiki has entered initial compatibility testing.
Keep swimming, Sailers! It's almost the weekend!
This week, we deployed a LOT of stuff. I'm seeing 27 tickets closed in releases. Most of them were backend changes or preparing for additional releases, but there are a few ones we'd like to highlight.
JavaScript Review
After lots of great work by our engineers, JS Review has been unblocked for UCP and we'll be able to start enabling custom JavaScript on UCP wikis soon!
Moderating your own Message Wall
You are now able to delete messages and replies on your own wall.
Migration Improvements
We've made some upgrades to our legacy to UCP migration script, including allowing the batching of wikis for migration, automatically purging the CDN at the conclusion of a migration, and other tweaks to improve the process.
Gadgets
The Gadgets extension has been ported to the UCP.
Spotify
The Spotify widget has been migrated to the UCP.
Next things:
Discussions enhancements are progressing.
As I've confirmed several times, Blogs will be coming to the UCP and the development of that feature is ongoing.
I'm back from Vacation and I brought you all some Release Highlights as souvenirs.
Reported Enhancement
On communities that don't have article comments, walls or Discussions enabled, the reported queue doesn't show filter options anymore that don't apply to that wiki.
Stop killing Categories!
A bug was fixed that sometimes caused fatal exception errors on category pages
The Toolbar isn't shy anymore
The bottom toolbar is no longer collapsed by default on every new wiki you visit.
You gotta picture the destination!
Image hotlinking from other wikis using vignette URLs works on the UCP now.
Translation Nation
The ability to automatically sync translations with CrowdIn was re-implemented on the UCP. We had to manually update translations for a few months, due to the jump from 1.19 to 1.33, but now we'll have automatic syncing, which means faster turnaround and better translations!
Design improvements for Message Wall 2.0
Replies don't look so disconnected from their parent post anymore; and when you edit someone else's message, it no longer states "editing your message".
---
We've got Discussion enhancements brewing now, so keep an eye out for those soon!
Just a few updates this week, as we spent a lot of time preparing other work for release.
Edit Counts
UserActivity should show the correct number of edits on UCP wikis now. Fun Fact: Edit counts were originally intended to qualify accounts against abuse filters, so the accuracy of them wasn't a priority beyond the first several edits.
Social Activity Tab
The new UCP Profile has a new tab called Activity that lists social feature engagement, separate from core wiki contributions.
Message Wall activity currently shown there. Article Comments and Discussions activity will follow in a later release.
Message titles can now be edited
Message titles on Message Wall can now be edited. Pretty straightforward.
One ThemeDesigner change
Our only default image in ThemeDesigner was a bokeh-heavy photo of police cruiser lights. This image has been swapped for a blue and red swirl.
Wikia.org branding ported to UCP
We have begun prep work for migrating wikia.org wikis, which have separate branding than their Fandom cousins.
IT BE FRIDAY, SAILORS! HOORAY!
I'm back from vacation and, while we only had one release this week, it was an important one, so let's get right to it...
Article Comments
They are live on the UCP!
Cool enhancement we've got this time around: Article Comments and Talk Pages coexist! No more either one or the other. We'll leave it up to your communities to decide how to use this additional functionality.
Anonymous commenting is allowed, but their permissions are limited, to cut down on spam and abuse. Anon users cannot report comments. Anon users cannot add images to their comments.
Message Wall 2.0 moderation enhancements Round 1
You can now lock and edit posts on Message Wall 2.0
More enhancements to come!
No more Wiki Wiki and Wikia Wiki names
When creating a new wiki, using the word wiki or wikia is now forbidden. We already append your wiki name with wiki, so we don't need The Greybeard Collective Wiki Wiki or The Mossfan Wikia Wiki popping up.
http to https
The legacy functionality which would redirect you to the correct https URL if you accidentally had http instead has been restored.
---
Upcoming Soon
- Custom JavaScript Review: Currently tackling some final bugs with this
- Message Wall 2.0 moderation enhancements Round 2
- Discussions enhancements Round 1: The condensed view of the Discussions board vs the default card view will be making its debut soon.
Hey gang!
Not a very big release week, except for the fact that we corrected image links!
Image Links
Bug fix deployed that causes images formatted as links to correctly link to the target pages, not to the image file itself. If you still see an image link performing badly, perform a null edit on the page (commit an edit with no changes) and that will force the correct behavior to apply.
UserActivity
The UserActivity extension has been ported to the UCP. It is active on UCP wiki and Wreck-It Woodhouse. There is currently a bug causing a MediaWiki exception error, based on some settings. We're working to correct it.
Message Wall
@ username mention have been disabled on Message Wall due to a tech limitation, not as spam prevention. I got two related conversations confused.
---
Upcoming Releases
Work continues on major releases for this stage, including JavaScript Review, Article Comments, and Discussions enhancements.
For Discussions enhancements, they are the key to beginning the migration of remaining wikis with Forums onto Discussions. More info can be found in my latest blog.
Personal Note
I will be on vacation for the next 6 days and, thus, will not be monitoring this thread. Rest assured that Mira Laime is always watching and will report any necessary feedback to the team :)
Hey gang!
Sorry for no highlights last week. The two releases we did were mostly to set up additional work and there weren't user-facing changes to highlight.
This week is a bit different, so pitter patter, let's get at 'er.
Message notification bug
Yesterday, we hotfixed the UCP bug that prevented messages from triggering notifications for users. Please let us know if you still see this happening!
Deeplinking messages
You can now deeplink with Message Wall posts
Odd errors and warnings
We fixed a big crop of bizarre errors and warnings that shouldn't have been happening.
Closed duplicate wikis
Wikis closed for being in violation of the new duplicate wiki policy now correctly show the This Wiki Has Been Closed page for 30 days before going to the This Wiki Does Not Exist page.
Password changing
Special:ChangePassword has been fixed.
SVG Rename
Renaming SVGs no longer breaks them.
WikiaInYourLang
The WikiaInYourLang extension has been updated to work on the UCP
---
And now for an important message about Image Links...
A fix is targeted for next week!
---
Forgot two!
The Google Maps extension (Maps) is now on UCP
Subpages are now activated by default in the main namespace
