This was a topic I had brought up to the group of Fandom Stars on Discord a while ago. I can’t necessarily quote the exact conversation but we discussed many variables that would need to be taken into consideration. I’ll go over some:
What if a user on a wiki dies and they were close to other?
There are multiple things admins can do to console a community without them to expecting them to get over it by themselves. Here’s a few things that can happen:
Allow a point to be made for users get the support they might need. The best thing to use in this case is a thread where users can help console each other in case they are deeply affected by one’s death.
Make an announcement informing the community of the passing of the user OR contact users individually who may not know or were close to the dead user to inform them of the passing. And in many cases, you will probably need to volunteer to be a consoler for those users as well.
What if a user is potentially dead but no one has the proof of their passing?
It’s good for admins and users alike to not jump to conclusions until there is viable evidence. Saying a person had died without proof they actually did can lead to numerous of problems. So to avoid that, if a user thinks someone had died, it would be best to contact a member of wiki staff and they have two available options:
Try to do research to find proof of the user’s passing.
Contact Fandom Staff to report that a user could’ve potentially died and they’d take it from there.
What if a user is threatening suicide or self harm?
Of course in most cases, they would be referred to Suicide resources that could potentially help them. But even then, posting a link to them asking them to click it is really not enough and can even hurt their self worth even more. Rather, it’s good to leave some words of encouragement and even try to help them if they’ve shown proof of suicidal thoughts or actions. It’s better if an admin of a community does this since they are meant to look over user needs of that specific wiki. But it’s also not limited to them. Wiki community members can also have a share. But if it seems they are being bombarded by a number of messages of people worried about them, it’s better if they wait to talk to them when cool down. Admins themselves have the unfortunate consequence that if they send a message, the suicidal user would think “They’re only doing this because it’s their job, not that they care.” And that’s why you should try to share personal words that help build them up.
The more people show they care, the better the outcome might be. But also, no matter how much people try, sometimes it don’t work.
What if a suicidal user actually commits suicide?
Things of this world are out of our hands. We can’t control what others feel or the things they do. So in many cases, users who’ve tried to help a suicidal user to keep from committing can often not have an effect.
When this happens, it’s up to wiki admins and Fandom Staff to intervene. This, they will try to lower tensions of the recent loss.
But what if users blame themselves saying “They could’ve done more”?
Staff and users who have managed to keep strong in the wake of devastating results should go individually to users who are having this thinking and try to help them to see that it isn’t their fault and that even that the user is gone, the important thing is that they tried,
Now this of course will not always fix the problem. A lot of it is out of user abilities. Pain will linger for as long as possible. But taking some of these steps can help levitate tensions and help users to keep on going. And who knows, it might save a life one day.
