What is "Current events"?

I am a new admin on a very old wiki. While searching for spam, I found this article:

Current eventsNumbersWiki

It was created by MediaWiki Default alongside the home page and other default pages. It seems intended to be a news page, but I've never seen a wiki use "Current events" as a new page. Could someone who has been here for a long time explain what this is?
