If it is a relic, it would be odd that they recently created a new group with just the right. I checked and, either way, it does not appear to be part of either Maps or Kartographer (the two main map extensions in use with MediaWiki sites).
It might be related to this announced plan: https://community.fandom.com/wiki/User_blog:MisterWoodhouse/A_Deeper_Look_at_Creator_Tools_and_What%27s_Next#Interactive_Maps
That sounds like a reasonable suspect. But there doesn't seem to be much information about what exactly they mean by "maps". If they are talking about maps of real places, there is already the Maps extension. I don't think they would offer two different extensions for the same purpose.
I guess I haven't really re-read it the blog itself, you are right it doesn't give much information. What I actually had in mind is the blog along with this comment, implying that it would be mainly about imaginary maps.
I Come from The Dog Man Wiki and i'm an Admin and look!
Yes, that's what the original question was about. In short, we don't know, just speculating.
Oh ok thanks i just wanted to know.
Well, if they are finally going to add such a feature for non-real-life maps, that would definitely be a good considering the topic of most wikis. A while ago, I tried making a script for add tooltips to image maps. It had some issues.
Well, the whole idea of interactive maps is not new, since it used to exist, but FANDOM stopped supporting it. This new right might be a placeholder for a future feature, but it really shouldn't be made visible or usable, if it does nothing.
What do you think?
