Is it possible to edit the references tag like you would be able to for a template? I would create a new template, but my wiki (prehistoric-wiki.fandom.com) has too many pages to sort through and manage. Is there any way to do this?

First: the link to your wiki is not correct, but I got it through changing 2 letters.
Second: Why do you want to change the reference tag? What do you want to do with it?
Third: The bright theme should be dark text on bright background and the header image should be either stretched or repeated, as it is currently cut at fullscreen on a HD screen.
1) Sorry for the typo
2) Right now it's just an idea, but i want to try and condense it somehow (eg. scroll box, 2 columns...)
3) Sure I can change that
2) You can customize the appearance of the references with CSS. So whatever your idea is, you can try it this way.
3) Thanks for the fast adjustment :)
2) Do you know somewhere I can start, I'm not good with CSS code
3) I don't see a stretch or repeat option
2) As I don't have an idea, what you want to do, I can't give you any hints ^^
3) You can set it in the theme designer unter the background image ("image background style"). But you could also set the background image to the hole body in Fandomdesktop.css:
body.skin-fandomdesktop {
background: var(--theme-body-background-image) fixed center 0 / cover var(--theme-body-background-color);
}
.fandom-community-header__background::before,
.fandom-community-header__background
{
background-image: none;
}
Maybe the image for the bright version could be brighter (with less contrast) and the body text black.
Is there a reason why you don't want to create a new template? Do you have an old template?
I don't have an old template, and I don't want to create one because I have far too many pages to sort through. Unless there's some sort of special page that lists all pages with the reference tag, I'd much rather edit the existing tag (if I can).
So looking at the wiki you mentioned above (a link would be better), it looks like you aren't using the common <ref></ref> and <references /> tag system for you references and you aren't putting them in any kind of wrapper tags like <div></div>. Without these elements, you will likely have to use some kind of bot to style them.
Do you have an example page you can give a link to that shows the references section you want to style?
What do you think?
