How do you change your username??? I'm new to Fandom and kind of confused :(
Ok thanks!
Just a note: understand that you can only change your username once, so make sure your new username is the one you want to stick with. <:
Also, you can create a new account if you want a different username after you rename you account but you cannot reclaim the old username. Once a name has been used, it is taken forever; even if there isn't an active account using the name.
OK
@Andrewds1021 @GarfieldTC Why? That's not fair. I thibk we should let woodhouse know.
@Nirvana Supermind The reason you do not change the username multiple times is the same reason as the reason you don't change your password multiple times. It can be quite a hassle
Uh, not quite.
There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes that you don't see but is required to rename an account. This take a lot of server resources so Fandom doesn't want their server tied down performing renames on a user's whim every 24 hours.
Additionally, as I already said, usernames can not be reused. This policy is to avoid confusion. Let's say my name two years ago as "ABC" and I left a message on a talk page and signed it. One year later I change my name to "DEF" and a month after that someone else takes the name "ABC" and signs a comment on the same talk page. How do you know it is a different user when the name is the same?
The two issues I just mention also occur in combination with each other. Let's say you linked to my message wall in a post here on Discussions while I was "ABC". Now that I am "DEF", what happens when user click the link? I think it is fair to say most users would expect the link to take them to the my new message wall under the name "DEF". To do that, the software has to recognize the rename and make the old message wall a redirect page. Now the new user takes the old name? What is their message wall? The message wall they typically would have is already taken by me. If you don't give it to them, it will cause issues when people try to link to their message wall but get redirected to mine. If you do give it to them, then the old link in your post will take users to the wrong message wall.
What do you think?
