Infobox Builder: share your feedback on the early version!

Hello Wikia!

I'm super happy to announce that today we have released an early version of the Infobox Builder - another step toward making infobox template creation easier! As usual we want to make this product great for all of us, and that's why we need your feedback! Try it out and share your thoughts.

How to access it

If you would like to play with it just create a template page on communitytest.wikia.com or portability.wikia.com, pick 'infobox' template type and enjoy the builder.

What it does

It allows you to create an infobox template without writing a single line of code. You can build your infobox from elements like title, row, image and section separator. After you compose your infobox you can publish it and use on article as a regular template.

Remember it's a very early version and it has several limitations:

no source mode editing
builder is unable to edit templates using complex markup
limited options to configure your fields
limited set of available elements
missing loading indicators
texts in the interface are far from being final
no theming of the interface (it uses default blue and white Wikia colors)
bugs and defects that we do not know about yet (we hope you will help us with finding them).

Currently we are working on solving the issues, so expect it to change. Please share your feedback and help us make it better.

This is a great idea and a fine addition to the site, and I look forward to seeing this build up and improve as time passes.

I've tested the tool again, and have some more thoughts. The current workflow is not quite intuitive.I noticed this when trying to create a full infobox using a blank interface. For example, to add a new item:

Click Row icon on the right hand side toolbar
Click "label 1" on the toolbar
Enter new label
Click "<- " arrow, and add new label/ item and repeat.

One issue, is the need to constantly switch between mouse and keyboard. This could be more like a spreadsheet, in which the workflow would involve keyboard arrows and use the toolbar for advanced options. Perhaps one could use arrow keys and F2 (or another OS Keyboard equivalent ) to edit and enter a new label directly in the infobox.

One possibility is moving the icons of "Row", image, etc to a separate toolbar, either on top, or perhaps on the left hand side. This will separate the notion of adding items from the notion of editing them.

Items like <navigation> and <header> don't really have any other other options so the only possibility is to add text. Although it seems that headers are currently linked to "collapsing groups" which currently seem to be created arbitrarily.

Lastly, it might be a good idea to use the "Example value" section for default values.

This is may actually have been intentional (disabling the converter), just not communicated. Also, some things never make it out of MVP status, so I wouldn't count on that for much.

It is not actually disabled. It is simply hidden or perhaps transparent. The interface is actually still there, and if you manage to find the "save button" it will save the conversion. Either that's caused by a bug or some strange CSS classes that came with the builder.

This time it's not a feature - just a bug that we are working on to fix;)
